Shubman Gill’s tour of England has not started on a good note. The highly-rated young opener lost his wicket cheaply in the ongoing warm-up match against Leicestershire.
The ongoing clash is India’s only warm-up game before they lock horns against England in the rescheduled Test. The much-anticipated Test is scheduled to start on July 1 in Birmingham. Team India is leading the series 2-1 and just a draw in the upcoming game will be enough for them to clinch a memorable series win.
Talking about the warm-up game, it began on Thursday (June 23). India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit and Gill walked out to bat, hoping to stitch a big partnership.
Gill looked in good touch at the start as he hit his India teammate Jasprit Bumrah for a 4 in the third over. In the following over, he hit another 4 off Will Davis. Rohit also hit Bumrah for a boundary to get going as both the India openers looked in good touch. Their partnership, however, did not last long as Gill departed soon.
After hitting two more boundaries, Gill became the first Indian wicket to fall. Davis bowled one outside the off and Gill could only edge it behind the stumps where his India teammate Rishabh Pant took an easy catch. The right-handed batsman departed after scoring 21 off 28 runs.

Gill is looking set to open the innings alongside Rohit in the upcoming Test against England. With KL Rahul out of the contest due to an injury, Gill and Rohit are the only designated openers in the team.
While the Punjab star has failed to do well in the warm-up game, he was in good form in the recently-concluded season of the Indian Premier League. Gill scored 483 runs in IPL 2022 and played an important role in Gujarat Lions’ triumphant campaign. The youngster would be hoping to score big against England and cement his place in the Test team.
