Everton vs. Liverpool: Combined XI

Have Liverpool Lacked the Same Intensity This Season?

Following up their first league championship success in 30 years was always going to be difficult for Liverpool this season. However, the Merseyside club seems to be missing the spark which saw them become such a dominant force last year.

With a lot of football to be played remaining this season, Liverpool could still end the campaign with much silverware. They remain in contention for the Premier League title, in what appears to be a wide-open contest, while they are in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

It is Liverpool’s front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino who have proved unstoppable over the past couple of seasons. They scored 57 goals in all competitions between them last season, a large chunk of their teams’ tally. At the time of writing, they have 31 goals, which still a healthy total but it is likely they will fall short of last year’s number.

Firmino, in particular, is struggling to continue his excellent strike rate. He has five goals in 25 appearances this season. While it is worth pointing out that the Brazilian’s contribution is far more than finding the back of the net, the 29-year-old will have expected to score more often than one in every five games.

Liverpool’s front three have played a lot of football over the past few years. This intense run of fixtures may just be catching up with them, which would explain why the intensity isn’t quite as high this season.

Against Manchester United in a recent Premier League fixture, they were unable to break down their rivals at Anfield. They had a lot of possession in that 0-0 result but could not find the back of the net to secure the three points.

Injuries Have Hit Them Hard

There is no doubt the injuries that Liverpool have suffered this season have really hurt them. The most notable is Virgil van Dijk who has been out of action since the 18th October. The 2019 PFA Player of the Year has been invaluable since joining from Southampton in January 2018.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has had to shuffle his players and even play some of his squad out of position to cover these losses. In that goalless draw with Manchester United, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson both played at Center back.

Liverpool are in a similar position to what Manchester City had to encounter 12 months ago. They lost their best defender when Aymeric Laporte was injured long term. Pep Guardiola’s side struggled for consistency as a result which affected their form in the league.

Given the number of defenders who have been out injured, Klopp will be pleased his side have hung in there in the Premier League. As of the 19th January, Liverpool are +400 with Betway to defend their title at the end of the campaign. If van Dijk does return for the final third of the season, it will be a big boost for the German boss.

New Approach with Thiago

One of the big differences with this Liverpool team in the 2020/21 season is that Thiago is now in midfield. The Spaniard is a very talented player and has had a lot of success with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga since moving to Germany from Barcelona.

Thiago is a player who is not rushed in midfield. He takes his time to assess what is ahead of him and then picks out his pass. This is a very different approach to what Georginio Wijnaldum, Henderson, and James Milner had last season where they were known for their fast intensity.

Liverpool’s number six has missed large parts of the season due to injury. He has now had a spell in the team, and it has coincided with the Reds struggling in front of goal. At one stage with Thiago in the team, they have gone three games without scoring, which is very unusual for a Klopp team.

It will be interesting to see if Klopp continues to start the Spanish international or if indeed, he changes his tactics to accommodate him in a different way. Thiago has a lot of experience of playing at the highest level in Spain and Germany, and he was part of the Bayern team which won the Champions League last season.

The next few months are going to prove interesting to see if this is a slight blip in Liverpool’s campaign. There is a good chance they will be back to their devastating best again. If they don’t get back in top form, next summer could be the time Klopp looks to freshen up his squad and some of his trusted stars may look for a new challenge in Europe.

Once again, they won it consecutively 1898-99 and 1899-1900 seasons. Their last title came in way back in the 1980-81 season and there has been a drought since then.

Premier League 2019-20: Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner Insists On Finishing The Entire Season

Liverpool Chairman, Tom Werner has insisted on finishing the entire Premier League 2019-20 season this year. Notably, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Premier League has been put on hold since the last couple of months. However, a ray of hope has emerged recently as Premier League clubs returned to training from May 18.

As of now, Liverpool are the obvious champions of the Premier League 2019-20 and are only two wins away from the nine games they have in hand to win the Premier League. Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner Expresses Intent To Finish The Entire Premier League Season

Werner wants to see the season completed but accepts safety – and the discovery of a vaccine – is a key priority as the pandemic continues.

“The more important thing is if we can figure out a way to get these matches played because I think it would be good for the country,” he said.

“The most important thing is safety. I do think the protocols that the Premier League are working on as somebody said its probably safer to play behind closed doors than to go to a supermarket,” the Liverpool chairman added.

Liverpool very close to realizing their Premier League dream!

Liverpool showed their dominance in the current season of Premier League yet again with a dominant 4-0 win over Southampton at Anfield recently. With this win, the Reds have scored 16 consecutive victories and have played 25 matches without getting defeated this season so far!

Already being heavily backed by top-rated sportsbooks on the internet as well as a great multitude of punters, Liverpool now have the EPL trophy clearly in their sight. Such has been their dominance this season, that Manchester City, the defending champions are in second position on the table, 22 points behind the leaders, making it the biggest ever gap in the history of the Premier League.

Liverpool looking like comfortable winners this season

Last year the race to the title came down to the final match, with Man City finishing 1 point clear of Liverpool. At this point, with 13 matches remaining in the season, it’s no longer a race. Instead, it can be termed as a 3 ½ month coronation prior to Liverpool’s crowning as the Premier League champions for the first time ever, since 1992 (the circuit’s launch year).

The last time that Liverpool won a top-flight title was in 1990, the first division tournament which was the predecessor of the Premier League. Prior to that, the Reds had emerged league champions 11 times from 1973 to 1990.

Did taste success in other tournaments

Regardless of being unsuccessful in winning the Premier League title, Liverpool did taste success in other competitions, for instance, winning four League Cups and three FA Cups over the past 30 years. They also emerged in the UEFA Champions League winners in 2004-05 and 2018-19, as well as UEFA Cup winners in 2000-01; and more recently they won the FIFA Club World Cup title in 2019.

However, the EPL championship eluded them till now. It’s a remarkable feat that Jurgen Klopp’s men have managed to claim 73 out of possible 75 points from the games they have played in the tournament so far. It’s a remarkable achievement considering the fact that EPL is amongst the most competitive sports leagues of the world. The Reds’ only slip came against Manchester United in October last year, when a late goal scored by Adam Lallana secured a 1-1 draw for the Reds.

Liverpool very close to realizing their Premier League dream! 1More feats worth highlighting

Liverpool have scored 20 straight wins at home so far, tying up with the EPL record. Currently they are riding an impressive 37-0-5 wave, only seven away from Arsenal’s record. Their last major hurdle in the ongoing EPL season will be on April 4 when they go up against Manchester City.

Over the last two seasons, Liverpool have had a record of 54-1-8, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Manchester City in January last year. In their last 10 matches, Reds have conceded only 1 single goal, and 15 overall this season.

The team’s manager Jurgen Klopp, an engaging and energetic German who arrived at Anfield from Borussia Dortmund over 4 years ago in October 2015, continues being the excellent manager he is, and plays down the team’s excellence, to keep them grounded.

UEFA Super Cup 2019: Liverpool Wins Their Fourth Super Cup Title After Beating Chelsea In The Penalty Shoot-Out

The UEFA Champions League 2018/19 winners Liverpool FC won their fourth Super Cup trophy after beating the UEFA Europa League 2018/19 winners Chelsea in the penalty shoot-out of UEFA Super Cup 2019 at Istanbul.

On last Wednesday (14th August) night, these Premier League sides met in the Super Cup. In the first 90 minutes, they had a 1-1 scoreline. While the Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud opened the scoreline on 36 minutes, Sadio Mane equalled the scoreline in the early second half (48′).

In the early first half of the extra-time (95′), Mane put ahead Liverpool. Six minutes later,  Jorginho equalled the scoreline through a penalty. After the extra-time, the scoreline was 2-2.

Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham was the only unsuccessful in the penalty shoot-out

Liverpool and Chelsea both were equally running with the perfect finishes in the penalty shoot-out until Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham’s shot was blocked on their fifth attempt. Finally, Liverpool won their fourth UEFA Super Cup crown with their favourable scoreline of 2 (5) – 2 (4).

Liverpool managed better shots on target

The Blues played strong football from the beginning while The Reds slowly grew up in that game. In the entire match, Liverpool managed 21 shots while Chelsea had 20 shots. Out of those, The Reds had 11 shots on target while The Blues only managed to put six shots on target.

In the 16th minute, Chelsea goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga brilliantly saved Mohamed Salah’s attempt. Six minutes later, The Blues winger Pedro hit on the top of the post.

In less than 15 minutes left of the first half, Olivier Giroud put Chelsea 1-0 ahead. Christian Pulisic brilliantly beat the defenders and raised a through ball to the French striker. Unmarked Giroud calmly beat the Liverpool debutant goalkeeper Adrian and opened the scoreline.

Just four minutes later, Pulisic’s grounded shot found the net, but then it was declined due to the earlier offside offence.

In just 3rd minute of the second half, Sadio Mane levelled the scoreline 1-1 with an open finish. After Fabinho built up that ball and Roberto Firmino’s touch beat Kepa, Mane easily put the ball in the net.

Both sides got some great opportunities to take the lead in that half, but they failed in their attempt. Chelsea substitute Mason Mount was successful in beating Adrian and hit the net, but the referee caught him offside.

Extra-time: Liverpool managed an early goal; Chelsea equalised through a penalty

With the scoreline of 1-1, the match entered the 30 minutes extra-time. In the fifth minute of the first-half in that extra time, Mane netted for the second time in this game. Once again. Firminho set up the ball for the unmarked Mane who finished that superbly without giving any chances.

Just a few minutes later, Adrian fouled Tammy Abraham inside the box after going to clearance a ball. Chelsea midfielder made no mistake to convert that penalty into the equaliser goal.

In the penalty shoot-out, Roberto Firminho, Fabinho, Divock Origi, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah scored for the Reds. Meanwhile, Joginho, Ross Barkley, Mason Mount and Emerson Palmieri successfully netted for the Blues. Finally, Adrian stopped Abraham’s attempt and secured a victory for Liverpool.

With this victory, Liverpool became the fourth team to win UEFA Super Cup for at least four times. Spanish giants Barcelona (five times) and Real Madrid (four times), and Italian club AC Milan (five times) are the other three sides who have won it for at least four times. After the 1977, 2001 and 2005 edition, Liverpool won the UEFA Super Cup 2019 edition.

Can Rhian Brewster Be Another Young Sensation Under Jurgen Klopp?

U17 World Cup top scorer and a rising star for Liverpool, can Rhian Brewster make it big?

Rhian Brewster scored a brace against Tranmere Rovers in a 6-0 friendly win yesterday. Jurgen Klopp, however refused to overreact on the situation and said we all know his amazing capabilities. “I could have scored one of Brewster’s goals he said. We shouldn’t be talking only about him, it was a fantastic game and other guys played very well too.

Brewster made his mark in the U17 World Cup in 2017 where he won the golden boot, also winning England the World Cup. He scored back to back hat-tricks against USA and Brazil in the knockout stages and also laid one in the final. Brewster played in the Chelsea youth academy since he was 7 but he moved to the Liverpool academy at the age of 15. He’s played since for the reds and signed a professional contract in 2018. Here, Chelsea again slipped on to a great talent, which they are seen frequently doing.

Can Rhian Brewster Be Another Young Sensation Under Jurgen Klopp? 2
Rhian Brewster (Credits: Twitter)

With a contract extension for Divock Origi, and Roberto Firmino still Liverpool’s main man, Brewster will have to impress Klopp to fit into his plans. “Rhian Brewster is a top striker, he is a top talent and I have told him already that he has an important role this year but how important depends on him. We will see. He has to play different positions as well – the centre, wing is possible I think, we will see how we line up, but there will be opportunities for him. I am sure.” said Klopp.

Liverpool who won the Uefa Champions League 2019, look quiet in the transfer window and have made only one signing until now. They signed highly rated Dutch defender Sepp Van Den Berg from PEC Zwolle for a £1.3 million fee.  They are also looking too sign 16 year old Harvey Elliott from Fulham who holds the record of the youngest player to play in the Premier league.
