Shahid Afridi May Retire After PSL 2022

Shahid Afridi looks set to finally call time on his playing career, strongly suggesting next year’s season at the Pakistan Super League will be his last.
Shahid Afridi, who is currently with Multan Sultans and spent two seasons at Peshawar Zalmi and one at Karachi Kings, expressed a desire to represent a fourth franchise, Quetta Gladiators, in his final season.

Shahid Afridi Last Played For Pakistan More Than 5 Years Ago But Has Continued To Play In The PSL Since Its Inception

Shahid Afridi last played international cricket for Pakistan more than five years ago in 2016 but has continued to take part in the PSL ever since its inception well into his forties.  In his international career, he scored 11,196 runs with 11 centuries and 51 half-centuries. He also picked up 541 wickets at the highest level with 10 five-wicket hauls.
“Maybe this ends up being my last PSL,” Shahid Afridi told reporters. “I would like to play for Quetta Gladiators this season, provided Multan allows me to leave. If Nadeem Omar and Quetta’s owners want to have me, I would love to represent them.”

He captained Peshawar Zalmi in the first season and was part of the team that won the title the following year. His current franchise, Multan Sultans, are the defending champions, having beaten Peshawar Zalmi in the final in June. Shahid Afridi played a part in the first half of this year’s edition before missing the UAE leg with a back injury.

Shahid Afridi, however, who played four times for Multan Sultans during the Karachi leg of the tournament, wasn’t available for the UAE leg after suffering the injury during training. Shahid Afridi retired from international cricket back in 2016 but continued to play league cricket mostly in Pakistan.

He has won the PSL with Peshawar Zalmi in his second season at the franchise, and also played a minor role for the Multan Sultans when they won the trophy last year.

Shahid Afridi Has Been One Of The Most Successful All-rounders In PSL

In case Shahid Afridi retires next season, he would walk away from the Pakistan Super League as one of its most successful all-rounders. To date, Shahid Afridi has 44 wickets in 50 Pakistan Super League games at an economy rate of 6.97. That places him eighth on the all-time list; no one who has taken more wickets and conceded fewer than seven runs per over.

While he has been relatively less successful with the bat, he has still had an impact. His 465 runs have come at a strike rate of 153.46 – only Kieron Pollard (166.24), Luke Ronchi (166.12), and Asif Ali (164.29) top that for those with at least 30 innings. Babar Azam tops the list of highest run-getters with 2070 runs in 58 PSL matches. Kamran Akmal with 1820 runs is 2nd on the list.

Amongst bowlers, Wahab Riaz tops the list with 94 wickets while the likes of Hasan Ali -72 scalps, Faheem Ashraf, and Mohammed Nawaz-55 scalps each, Mohammed Amir-54 scalps, Sohail Tanvir-53 scalps, and Shaheen Shah Afridi-50 scalps are amongst bowlers with 50 or more wickets in the PSL.

The 2022 Pakistan Super League will take place in January and February after it was moved to an earlier window to avoid a clash with the Indian Premier League and squeeze in a tour by Australia.

Sarfaraz Ahmed Admits He Gets Agitated On The Field Often But Is Normal Away From The Ground

Sarfaraz Ahmed, Quetta Gladiators’ captain has admitted that he does get agitated on the field quite a lot. He, however, asserted that whatever happens on the field stays on it and doesn’t affect his off-field equation with players.

Quetta Gladiators had a rough time in PSL 2021 as they lost four of their five matches before the tournament was suspended due to COVID-related breaches. In a number of games before the postponement, Quetta Gladiators skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed was seen losing his temper.

Sarfaraz Khan’s Style Is To Be Expressive On The Ground But Off It, Everything Becomes Normal

In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, though, Sarfaraz Ahmed clarified that there was nothing much to it and he was just disappointed with the team for failing to grab their opportunities.

The former Pakistan captain explained: “It is just my style (to be expressive). During crunch time, and when you are not doing well, it is important to avail all the opportunities that come your way. But all these things (getting angry) happen on the ground, nothing is taken off the field. Everything is normal once we come out of the ground.”

Quetta Gladiators began their PSL 2021 campaign with a loss to Karachi Kings by seven wickets. They subsequently also went down to Lahore Qalandars (nine wickets), Peshawar Zalmi (three wickets), and Islamabad United (six wickets). They opened their account with a 22-run triumph over Multan Sultans before PSL 2021 was suspended.

Sarfaraz Ahmed Blames Fielding As Reason Behind Losses In PSL 2021 And Isn’t Disheartened With Limited Opportunities In Pakistan Team

Asked to analyze what went wrong for Quetta Gladiators in the first four games, Sarfaraz Ahmed felt that the team did not do badly, but it was the fielding that cost them in a big way.

He elaborated: “If you look back at the five matches, we did reasonably well, but the major factor that let us down was fielding. We were really poor in that department. We missed catches and run-outs at important times and that was a major setback, which is why we lost so many matches.”

Mohammad Rizwan

With the emergence of Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfaraz Ahmed’s opportunities in the Pakistan playing XI have dried up. He played only one ODI in South Africa and one T20I in Zimbabwe. The 34-year-old, though, is happy to be part of the team set up and wants to keep learning.

He asserted: “There is nothing to be disheartened about. My aim when I am with the Pakistan team is to improve my skills and fitness as much as possible. Irrespective of whether you are playing or not, when you are part of the team, you get a chance to interact and learn from top coaches. We have Misbah-Ul-Haq, Younis Khan and we also get a chance to work with Mohammad Yousuf sometimes. So we get a lot to learn from these great players. I always try to keep on learning and, even when I play PSL games, I try to implement what I have learnt and do my best on the field.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Quetta Gladiators will resume their PSL 2021 campaign when they face Islamabad United in Abu Dhabi on June 3.

Former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed was among 25 players and staff of the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) sixth edition, whose visas to the United Arab Emirates were delayed. Pacers Mohammad Hasnain, Imran Khan, PCB Media Department Officer Emad Hameed, Asif Afridi, Umar Amin, Muhammad Musa, Zaid Alam, Zeeshan Ashraf, Abrar Ahmed, Imran Randhawa, Mohammad Haris, and Aamir Khan are among the players and staff who have been denied a visa.

Darren Sammy Insists PSL 2021 Wasn’t Called Off Due To Him And Wahab Riaz

Darren Sammy and Wahab Riaz had allegedly breached the bio-secure bubble in the first half of PSL 2021. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 will reportedly resume in the first week of June, and all the teams would be gearing up for the marquee event.

Darren Sammy Insists He And Wahab Riaz Didn’t Break The Bio-Secure Bubble

The T20 tournament, which was initially scheduled to take place in February and March, was suspended midway after several members contracted the COVID-19 virus despite being in the bio-bubble. While the main reason behind the breach isn’t understood yet, some reports suggested that Wahab Riaz and Darren Sammy have violated the protocols. Darren Sammy is the head coach of Peshawar Zalmi, while Wahab Riaz leads the side.

At the start of PSL 2021, the duo was accused of breaching the bio-secure protocols to meet team owner Javed Afridi during their practice session. As per the rules, they were supposed to be in isolation for three days and had to return two negative COVID-19 tests to be allowed back in the bubble. However, Darren Sammy and Wahab Riaz joined the squad before the required period, and the latter even played all the games.

Subsequently, fans lashed out at Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for easing the norms for the duo. The duo came under the scanner even further when the entire competition was postponed. Speaking of the same, Darren Sammy claimed he had nothing to do with the PSL being paused indefinitely.

“I wouldn’t say we broke the bio-secure bubble. This is new territory for everybody. When I read the news, it made it sound like Wahab and myself left the hotel and ventured out. We just had training and we said hello to our boss (Javed Afridi). By the time we realized what had happened, we had two COVID tests, so did the Boss,” Sammy said in an interview with The Current.

Peshawar Zalmi has a strong squad for PSL 2021 consisting of the likes of Fabian Allen, David Miller, Fidel Edwards, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik, and the team management will expect their batsmen to perform better under mentor and batting consultant Inzamam-ul-Haq’s guidance.

Fawad Ahmed, Tom Banton, and another Islamabad United player besides one support staff member with the Karachi Kings (Kamran Khan) testing positive for Covid-19 have led to concerns which eventually led to the postponement of PSL 2021.

Darren Sammy: PSL 2021 Wasn’t Called Off Because Of Me And Wahab Riaz Shaking Hands With Peshawar Zalmi Boss

Highlighting that no one from the Peshawar Zalmi squad had got infected, the former West Indies captain said that the whole team was very strict about the rules, so it would be wrong to claim that PSL 2021 was suspended due to Wahab Riaz and his actions.

“We were negative and I could tell you from that day onwards, Peshawar Zalmi was really strict to the books and if you noticed, none of our players tested positive during or after that and the tournament was definitely not called off because of me and Wahab shaking hands with our boss at the cricket ground,” he added.

PSL will now be resuming in Abu Dhabi, with Darren Sammy joining his team soon. The Wahab Riaz-led side is currently second in the team standings, with three wins in five games.

Only 14 games were completed in the 34-match tournament. The remaining 20 Pakistan Super League 2021 matches are scheduled to be held in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from June 1-20.

Peshawar Zalmi Ropes In Legendary Former Pakistan Skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq As Mentor Cum Batting Consultant

Since retiring, Inzamam-ul-Haq has had coaching stints with Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Peshawar Zalmi welcomed him to their franchise with the following tweet: “Legend Inzamam Ul Haq joins Peshawar Zalmi as Mentor/Batting Consultant for remaining matches of PSL 6. Welcome to the Zalmi family.”

Inzamam-ul-Haq played a vital role in the rise of the Afghanistan cricket team. When he was the team’s coach, the Afghans upset the West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016. Peshawar Zalmi has a strong squad for PSL 2021, and the team management will expect their batsmen to perform better under Inzamam-ul-Haq’s guidance.

Peshawar Zalmi Is In 2nd Spot Before IPL 6 Was Suspended Midway Due To Bio Bubble Breach

Having recorded three wins and two defeats in the first phase of PSL 2021, Peshawar Zalmi is currently in the second position on the points table, behind defending champions Karachi Kings. Peshawar Zalmi won three of their five matches in the first phase of PSL 2021.

Shimron Hetmyer will make his Pakistan Super League debut with Multan Sultans. PSL 6, which was suspended in March, will resume in Abu Dhabi in June. Multan Sultans signed the West Indies big-hitter along with opener Johnson Charles.

Afghanistan’s star-leg spinner Rashid Khan will return to Lahore Qalandar for the PSL 6. The six-team tournament was stopped after 14 games in March after seven people, including six players, tested positive for COVID-19, and the franchises were allowed to add two more players to their squads in Saturday’s virtual players draft.

Pakistan Cricket Board Is Considering UAE As A Venue To Stage Remainder Of PSL 2021

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering the United Arab Emirates as a venue to stage the remainder of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Twenty20 tournament, but the country’s Covid-19 body will take a final call, the governing body said on Thursday.

The PCB’s flagship tournament was suspended after 14 games in March after seven individuals, including six players, tested positive for Covid-19.

Pakistan Cricket Board Earlier Stated That Pakistan Super League Would Resume On June 1 And The Remaining 20 Games Will Be At Karachi

The governing body Pakistan Cricket Board had said last month that the PSL would resume on June 1 and the remaining 20 games would take place in Karachi’s National Stadium, with the final on June 20.

“Now, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) will announce the decision. If it decides that the league should be resumed, we will bio-secure Karachi and all matches would be played there,” a PCB spokesman said.
“If the NCOC does not give the go-ahead to PCB for holding matches in Karachi, we will consult the franchises to hold the rest of the tournament in the UAE.”

ESPNCricinfo reported that all six PSL franchises had asked the Pakistan Cricket Board to move the tournament to the UAE, which also hosted last year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. The lucrative IPL T20 competition of 2021 was suspended abruptly this week, triggered by a resurgence of the pandemic in India.

The six teams participating in PSL – Islamabad United, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, Karachi Kings Multan Sultans, and Quetta Gladiators – selected players who will serve as replacements for originally listed players now unavailable for the rest of PSL 2021.

The Kolkata Knight Riders duo of Andre Russell, who is one of the most sought-after T20 players, will replace Tom Banton in the Quetta Gladiators squad whereas spin all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will join Lahore Qalandars as Rashid Khan’s replacement.

IPL 2021 Was Also Suspended Indefinitely Midway By BCCI

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was suspended by The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday, due to at least six covid-19 cases in 4 franchises. Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 was also suspended early in March after 14 matches following an outbreak of cases among players and support staff.

While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to resume the PSL 2021 on June 1st in Karachi, the BCCI would have to reschedule the IPL 2021.

All six Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises have asked the Pakistan Cricket Board to move the remaining games of the rescheduled 2021 edition of the tournament out of Karachi to the UAE because of a fresh surge in Covid-19 cases in Pakistan.

As it stands, the plan is for the teams to assemble in Karachi by May 23 to begin their mandatory seven-day quarantine, and action is scheduled to resume on June 2. Sixteen league-stage matches are slotted till June 14, with the playoffs taking place between June 16 and June 18, and the final on June 20.

PSL 2019: Multan Sultans Name Andre Russell as Replacement for Injured Steven Smith

Earlier, former Australian skipper has picked an elbow injury. Thus, it ruled him out for the competitive cricket for at least six weeks.

Russell, who was the part of two-time PSL champions Islamabad United (IU) would undoubtedly bring a wealth of experience to the Sultans table.

Interestingly, the maiden edition of the PSL held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Russell claimed 16 scalps in 10 outings. To be precise, in 2016, he became leading wicket-taker in Pakistan’s domestic professional league competition.

On the other side, Sultans have already availed the services of experienced all-rounder Shahid Afridi and a prominent batsman Shoaib Malik.

In the third edition of the PSL, Russell had a tough in which he could bag four wickets in four outings. However, this time around under the dynamic leadership of Malik, Russell could get more opportunities with the ball in the UAE.

Owing to the stability at the top, Sultans also rely on English pick James Vince, who had a solid domestic season in the United Kingdom (UK).

Zalmi repose faith in Andre Fletcher:

On the other side, Peshawar Zalmi roped in Andre Fletcher who couldn’t leave an impact in the last season.

“It is great to have Andre Fletcher back since he is not only a good player. But a true sportsman off the field as well,” Zalmi’s Director Cricketing Affairs and head coach Mohammad Akram said in a release.

In the previous edition, Fletcher could score 86 in five games. But Akram expressed delighted on the rejoining of Fletcher while maintaining he sets up an ambience.

“He is known to be someone who keeps the dugout atmosphere entertaining. We are super excited to have him back with us,” Akram added.

Meanwhile, Zalmi Chairman Javed Afridi has also expressed excitement over the inclusion of Fletcher.

The fourth edition of PSL will kick off on February 15, 2019. In a curtain raiser, Zalmi will take on Sarfraz Ahmed’s Quetta Gladiators in Dubai.

Kamran Akmal believes he can play in all the three formats

Discarded Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal has expressed his desires to play in all the three formats of the game. Akmal was instrumental as he powered Peshawar Zalmi into the final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with a match-winning 27-ball 77 against Karachi Kings in the second eliminator.

The wicket-keeper batsman has been performing well in the domestic circuit and has been knocking the doors of the national selectors. Akmal was ignored for Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand despite being the top scorer in the National T20 tournament, scoring 432 runs in eight innings. He also smashed the country’s highest T20 score, 150 during the tournament.

Once one of the batting mainstays of his team, Akmal has found it tough to regain his spot in the national side and has raised questions on several occasions regarding his exclusion.

A couple of days after he set the Gaddafi stadium ablaze with his amazing stroke play Akmal said that his domestic record backs his claim to play in all the three formats.

He said:

“Those who have any doubts on my performance in all formats must turn the pages of domestic cricket during the last three years. I have scored more runs than any other batsmen in all formats of the games. Be it a T20, one-day or four-day cricket my performance is enough to make my critics believe that I am ready for all formats. Performing in all formats of the game does not come as a fluke. In fact it is the result of hard work and complete focus on the game. I am happy that my hard work has paid off.”

He also added he was ready to play any role the management or the selectors asked him to play.

“The job of a player whether he is young or experience one is to perform to a level where everyone can easily acknowledge his contributions. Over the years I have been doing that for region and for department. It is not in the PSL alone that I have been a leading performer. One-day and four-day cricket played under the PCB umbrella would also vouch for contributions.”

Akmal also spoke on his knock in the eliminator:

“I always look towards the team requirements. Zalmi required a brisk start in a rain shortened match. I am glad that along with AD Fletcher, I set the platform for a big total. At the end the opening wicket partnership turned out to be the decisive one for our team.”

Peshawar Zalmi captain Darren Sammy showcases his Rapping skills

The West Indians have always entertained the fans both on and off the field. The Windies players bring in the x-factor with themselves and entertain the fans with their attitude on the field and then off it. Nothing was different in this case in the PSL as well.
