Regaining SRH Captaincy Is Not A Redemption Tale, Says Spirited David Warner

David Warner, who led the team to their first IPL title in 2016 has regained the position as the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the upcoming 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled in September-November in UAE. But the Aussie player didn’t want to label his captaincy as the redemption tale.

David Warner was removed from the captaincy position after he was framed for being the architect of the sandpaper scandal in the 2018 cape town test against South Africa. He was banned from an international form of cricket for a year but he was available to play IPL. He featured in the IPL 2019 edition as the SRH’s opener and scored heavily. He was the highest scorer for them, amassing 692 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 143.86.

Dawid Warner is delighted to again lead the Hyderabad franchise but doesn’t want to see it as a redemption tale. He further showed gratitude for trusting him and making giving him the responsible job.

I don’t see it as a redemption tale, I just see it as an honour to captain the Sunrisers,” David Warner said. “I’ve got a great relationship with the players and the staff and most importantly with the owners, and I’ve expressed my gratitude to that and I thank them for that. I’ll put my thinking cap on and try my best to move us forward to another IPL title.”

In the last edition, Kane Williamson and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were made the captain and vice-captain of SRH. However, Warner never felt bad for not leading the team because he has always considered himself as his captain.

“But from where I sit, (there’s) nothing different. I still considered myself a leader when I was there last year. It doesn’t matter if you have a ‘C’ next to your name or not, you’re a leader in your own right,” he said.

David Warner has so far played 126 IPL matches and scored 4706 runs. He has also won three times the orange cap in IPL, the last being in 2019.

Twitter User Opines The Chances Of Jimmy Neesham In Sunrisers Hyderabad, The New Zealander Replied

The New Zealand cricketer Jimmy Neesham has always shown the interest to be part of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Seeing his performance this year, the franchise would like to buy the allrounder in the upcoming auction for the 13th edition of IPL. He played in the cash-rich league only in 2014 and is eager to be the part of the IPL 2020 edition.

Neesham, who is famous for his tweets, has pointed out that the IPL auction is unpredictable but has further shown his interest to be part of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). A twitter user has also pointed out that SRH, captained by Kane Williamson, might get him in the auction. Jimmy Neesham answered the user with a funny GIF.

“Kane is the captain of Hyderabad. And, they don’t have a middle-order LH batsman who can hit sixes. So…” A Twitter user said.

Jimmy Neesham’s IPL Career

He made the IPL debut in 2014 for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) where he got the chance to play four matches. Neesham picked only one wicket and scored 42 runs. Seeing his poor performance, the Delhi franchise dropped him from the team. In the following year, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but missed out the entire tournament due to injury and was dropped next year. Since then he has remained unsold in the IPL auctions.

The hard-hitting batsman and a death bowler, Jimmy Neesham can give a match-winning performance in the T20 League. The franchise can eye the player in the auction after seeing his performances in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

In the CWC 2019, the left-handed batsman was the third-highest run-scorer for New Zealand with 232 runs in 10 matches. Also, he picked 15 wickets in that mega tournament. So, he can prove to be a beneficial player in the upcoming edition.

Captain's knock from Warner guide SRH to qualify for the final

IPL 2019: David Warner Arrives In Hyderabad, SRH Share First Look Of Him In India

David Warner is all set to make his comeback to the IPL season this year as he will be playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The former captain of the franchise had to miss last year’s tournament due to the ban imposed by Cricket Australia.

In a photo shared by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Warner can be seen in Hyderabad and was also greeted by the officials there.

Warner landed in India along with Steve Smith.

Both the players met the members of the Australian cricket team in UAE, who are all set to play Pakistan in a five-match ODI series.

Warner and Smith are not a part of the squad as their ban ends on March 28.

There were expectations that these two could be selected for last two ODIs, that will be played after March 28 but Cricket Australia did not select them.

Instead, they will be playing IPL, which will be the only tournament for them since making their comebacks from an elbow injury.

Incidentally, both Warner and Smith suffered elbow injuries during the Bangladesh Premier League.

Warner’s issue was a small one and he is set to run for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Although it is yet to be known whether both the players will play the matches that will be played before Mach 28 or not.

In Warner’s absence, Kane Williamson was handed the captaincy duties of SRH.

The decision came as a surprise as Shikhar Dhawan was expected to be given the job.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was appointed as deputy to Williamson.

Under a new skipper, Sunrisers Hyderabad performed well and qualified for the final of the tournament, where they lost Chennai Super Kings, again.

On all four occasions that the two teams faced each other, MS Dhoni-led side emerged as the winner.

The two out of four wins came at Qualifier and final as well.

This year, SRH could be without the services of Kane Williamson for a couple of matches that can see Bhuvneshwar leading the team.

Despite being present in the team, Warner is not expected to be given the captaincy job as Cricket Australia had banned him from captaincy for lifetime.

He will never be appointed as captain of any Australian team.

Warner led T20 franchises during his stint at Global Canada T20 and Bangladesh Premier League.

IPL 2018: Shikhar Dhawan Set to Return to Action Soon After Elbow Injury

Sunrisers Hyderabad suffered a major blow during their clash against Kings XI Punjab on 19th April, 2018 as their star opener Shikhar Dhawan was hit by a short ball bowled by paceman Barinder Sran.

Dhawan was forced to retire hurt after facing a solitary delivery. This blow also forced Dhawan to miss their match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday (April 22).

Eventually, SRH went on to lose the last-over thriller by just four runs.

SRH camp is already missing David Warner as the Australian was banned following a ball-tampering scandal. Shikhar Dhawan‘s elbow injury has doubled Hyderabad-based outfit’s miseries and has seriously affected the team’s firepower at the top of the order.

Dhawan has been at the helm of SRH’s batting in the ongoing eleventh edition of the season. Dhawan struck a match-winning 77 in SRH’s first game against Rajasthan Royals. He then hit a 45 in his team’s narrow win over Mumbai.

The attacking batter Dhawan has had only one failure which came in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as he could only score seven.

However, the left-handed batsman Shikhar Dhawan has assured his fans that he is recovering well and will return to action in the IPL soon.

Dhawan captioned his video on Twitter and wrote, “Thanks to all my fans and well-wishers for the wonderful messages you have been sending and wishing for my recovery. I’m on my path to recovery and will be back in action soon. Till then enjoy the #iplt20 #willbebackinactionsoon.”

SRH mentor and former India batsman VVS Laxman also shrugged off any reports of serious injury as he said, “There’s a contusion (elbow) because of the hit. There was some swelling but it has subsided.”

IPL 2018: Twitter Reactions: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

The 10th match of cricket’s marquee event saw Sunrisers Hyderabad challenge hosts Kolkata Knight Riders at their own fortress at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Kane Williamson‘s SRH team, after completion of one week, are becoming the team to beat this IPL, with the kind of balance and bowling line up they possess.

The talking point of the match had to be three former Kolkata Knight Riders cricketers returning back to their former home. The likes of Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan and Wriddhiman Saha, all come back to their beloved ground at Kolkata.

Manish Pandey and Shakib Al Hasan were simply exceptional in the field as the 11 crore man held on to a blinder at point to dismiss Nitish Rana. Pandey almost pulled off yet another sensational catch at long off but saved a certain hit over the ropes for his side.

KKR’s retained batsman, Chris Lynn, desired to bring in some Lynnsanity to the game as he scored a free-flowing 49 off 34 balls. Lynn entertained the crowd with seven boundaries and a maximum.

His knock was curtailed by effective bowling from Shakib Al Hasan, who picked up a couple of wickets and conceded only 21 runs in his five overs.

Bhuvi yet again showed his experience in IPL cricket as he claimed three wickets, conceding runs at only 5.25 runs an over.

6’8” Billy Stanlake also chipped in with a couple of crucial wickets to continue his form with the ball. Yet again, the heavy line up of Sunrisers Hyderabad restricted the Kolkata to only  138 for the loss of 8 wickets.

Let us look at how Twitter reacted

IPL 2017: We Had A Chance Of Defending 128 Across 20 Overs, Says Muttiah Muralitharan

Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan has said the result of the eliminator against Kolkata Knight Riders could have been different, had his bowlers got a 20-overs game. Batting first, the defending champions could post only 128 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The target was not an imposing one, but given the way the M Chinnaswamy pitch has behaved this season and the strong bowling lineup of Sunrisers, Muralitharan felt his team had a good chance of defending the low total.

But when Kolkata’s inning began after over three hours of heavy rain, the Sunrisers bowlers had only 48 runs to defend in 6 overs. And although they made a blazing start, reducing the Knight Riders to 12 for 3 in the second over, Gautam Gambhir played a 19-ball 32 runs knock to take his side through quite comfortably in the end.

“Overall, Bangalore wicket has been low-scoring. 130, I thought, was par,” Muralitharan said after the match.

“Across 20 overs, we had a chance of defending it. The surface was up and down. But this is part and parcel of the game. They won the toss, so they deserved to win.”

After being put in to bat first, the Sunrisers’ innings never took off. With the Bangalore pitch not easy to go for shots, the Kolkata bowlers bowled a disciplined line to keep the batsmen under check throughout the innings.

Umesh Yadav and Trent Boult began brightly, rarely giving the Sunrisers openers-Warner and Shikhar Dhawan- any loose balls and as a result, the defending champions could score only 24 runs in the first four overs.

The pressure finally got the better off Dhawan who top-edged a Yadav delivery to get dismissed for only 11 runs. Kolkata bowlers continued bowling a disciplined line, not allowing Warner and his new partner Kane Williamson to go for the big shots. By the time the powerplay ended, Sunrisers were only 30 for 1. The duo added 50 runs for the second wicket but once they were dismissed in quick succession, the new batsmen found it tough to get going on the tough track as the defending champions could manage only 128.

“The wicket is not great to play shots. We would’ve been bowled out for 70-80 if we tried to play shots. We were thinking of 140 and finished 10 short because they bowled well. We had the bowling to defend it across 20 overs. We’ve seen how teams have defended 130-135 here. Unfortunate the rain came, we can’t complain,” the spin wizard said.

He further rued the untimely rain once again before saying that his team had a good season. At the same time, he also hoped of making a similar team next year when majority of the players will go in auction pool and winning the title.

“Unfortunately, it was the rain, which you cannot complain about, and you need to move on because they played better. We had a very good season and we played well,” he said.

However, unfortunately you need to go out sometimes when you are in the knockouts. Therefore, unfortunately this year is not our year. We will make sure if we can build the same team next year, come back and fight for the trophy,” he added.

Speaking about the performance of the players, he said:“Our batsmen batted well, the bowlers, who were picked in the auction, did well as well. Therefore, we are satisfied with our players along with our performance as well.”

He concluded the press conference by accepting that defeat is a part and parcel of the game and congratulating the players of his team.

“We also won eight matches or something, while we just lost five matches, along with this loss. We won it last year, and that is not going to happen every time. Every team tries hard. Therefore, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. We take it on the chin and say ‘Ok, it’s not our year’. I also congratulate all the players who played really well for us,” the former Sri Lanka bowler concluded.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

IPL 2017 Match 53 – Gujarat Lions Vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – SRH Predicted XI

Thanks to their own approach, the Sunrisers Hyderabad now find themselves in a spot of bother as only a win now can guarantee their advancement into the playoffs. With 15 points in 13 games, the side is delicately placed, as a loss to the Gujarat Lions at Kanpur could well end their campaign if Kings XI Punjab beat the Rising Pune Supergiant on Sunday afternoon.

Recent form wise, however, the defending champions will be pretty upbeat as they come on the back of a convincing win over Mumbai Indians at home. The move to play Afghan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi turned out to be a great choice as the off-spinner derailed Mumbai’s batting lineup. That was a more attacking choice as in-form New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson was rested. Going into Kanpur, the Sunrisers would be hoping to repeat a similar performance from their previous game.

The sides clashed very early into the season within the first week of this edition as the Sunrisers hammered the Gujarat Lions at home. Leg-spinner Rashid Khan toyed away with the Lions batsmen as he picked up three crucial top order wickets, all LBW’s.

Needing a mediocre 136 to win, the Sunrisers got there with more than 4 overs to spare as skipper David Warner led the assault with a fine half century. All-rounder Moises Henriques too contributed with an unbeaten half century.

Recent form this season:

GL: L, W, L, L, L

SRH: W, L, L, W, W

Talking Points:

Sunrisers’ star batsman Yuvraj Singh was injured against Mumbai Indians as he hurt his little finger in the process of collecting the ball. According to mentor VVS Laxman, the veteran southpaw should be fit for the clash as he had plenty of time to recover. If Yuvraj isn’t fully fit, one can expect Deepak Hooda to take his place for the all important clash.

Mohammad Nabi is bound to be retained after such a phenomenal bowling performance where he choked the Mumbai batting. Apart from his tight off-spin bowling, Nabi offers a decent batting package as well which can be used. Despite underperforming for a long part of the season, Moises Henriques would be retained.

SRH Predicted XI:

  1. S. Dhawan 2. D. Warner (c) 3. M. Henriques 4. Y. Singh 5. N. Ojha 6. M. Nabi 7. B. Sharma 8. B. Kumar 9. R. Khan 10. S. Kaul 11. A. Nehra

IPL 2017 – It Was Shikhar Dhawan Of The Old – David Warner

One interesting trend about the Sunrisers Hyderabad in this edition of the IPL was their poor track record in away games. They finally set that straight win a convincing performance over Kings XI Punjab in Mohali. The visitors were dominant on all fronts as things took off with openers Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner providing the side off to a blistering start. Kane Williamson’s productive cameo eventually got them over the coveted 200 run mark.

Punjab got off to a promising start as Martin Guptill in his first outing for Kings XI played a brief cameo. The match, however, was turned on its head thanks to an efficient spell from Rashid Khan, as the leggie picked up a wicket while conceding just 16 runs in his 4 overs.

Post the 26 runs victory, David Warner lauded his team for a fine performance, Shikhar Dhawan in particular.

“The way he played, it was the Shikhar of old,” said Warner. “Williamson is a fantastic player, the way he plays so freely and elegantly, it’s great for our team. I’ve said in my previous interviews that we strive to find the right balance, and we’ve got that. I just tried to tinker a bit with what Kings XI did that I felt was easier for us in the first six overs of our innings.”

“We know here generally, getting 180 you generally win most games. The wicket played fantastically. Fantastic innings from Marsh. A couple of basic drops from us in the outfield. It’s a bit hard at this venue in the lights, but no excuses,” Warner added.

Rashid Khan was the obvious choice for the Man of the Match and the teenager was delighted with yet another fine bowling performance.

“It’s a big league and it’s a big stage, playing with big names. So always trying my best to learn from them,” Khan said. “We have a very good coaching staff. Murali has been superb so far with me and is supporting me and is giving me all his experience. I’m enjoying myself with him. The confidence and the motivation given from the coaching staff and the skipper helps. I would like to dedicate this award to my brother. He has prayed for me and this goes to him.”

IPL 2017 – Twitter Reacts As Sunrisers Hyderbad Comfortably Beat Kings XI Punjab

The Sunrisers Hyderabad got their campaign back on track with an easy win over the Kings XI Punjab at Mohali. After being put in to bat on an absolute paradise of a pitch, the visitors were off to a flying start with the ever-reliable duo of Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner going all guns blazing. Dhawan struck fluency with a devastating half century as he finally displayed shades of his good old self.

Needing in excess of 10 runs per over right from the very start, the Kings XI were in for some trouble when both openers made their way back. Australian batsman Shaun Marsh kept a few hopes alive with his sparkling half century, but once he was dismissed, the game was all but over.

Fans on Twitter were active throughout the high scoring game and kept themselves entertained with several tweets. Below are some of those tweets.

IPL 2017: Match 29 – Sunrisers Hyderabad v Royal Challengers Bangalore – Match Prediction

RCB’s quest of reviving their dwindling chances of making it to the playoffs will be tested by the buoyant Sunrisers Hyderabad when the two sides meet at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The last time when the two teams met during the inaugural match of the season, it was the defending champion meeting their last year’s title challengers. However, in a matter of few weeks, the equation has changed drastically.

On the one hand, SRH looks like a strong contender for the title win once again; RCB, on the other hand, has been made to taste dirt consistently this season.

A 2016 like comeback was being anticipated from the Virat Kohli-led side but their current form does not suggest anything like of that kind.

SRH made a quick recovery after faltering on some occasions initially. While their most recent fixture ended in a loss, they would still be high on confidence, as their batting and bowling unit seem to be supporting each other really well.

SRH would have won the match against RPS at the MCA Stadium, Pune. But, that day simply belonged to MS Dhoni, who blew away the bowling attack to chase down the target of 178 set by SRH batting first. The visitors had a good grip on the match and would have ended up winning had the Dhoni phenomena not occurred.

RCB registered their lowest IPL total against KKR the other night. This embarrassing batting show must have fired up skipper (he was already fuming in the post-match interview) and the will come back harder at the opposition.

However, this factor alone does not give the edge to RCB. SRH’s bowling side is now world renowned for its quality and definitely better than KKR. Therefore, Kohli & Co have a bigger challenge awaiting them on the match day.

View on think tank:

RCB would be wary of the opposition bowling attack. The instruction will be clear – Play the bowler to their merit and wait for mistakes to happen. Bhuvi, Nehra, Kaul and Rashid Khan can also dismantle them even if the slightest opportunity arises. The bowlers did a fine job and will be expected to do the same.

The Mohammad Nabi versus Moises Henriques for the all-rounder’s slot will be discussed. Nabi has got the handful of opportunities while Henriques has been in a wonderful form. Will SRH swap Henriques for Nabi in the important upcoming match? This will be the question.

Tracking the strengths:

Batting remains the strength focussing around the ‘big three’ – Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle – will be the key strength. Kohli especially will be looking forward to the upcoming match after registering his first duck of his 10 seasons long IPL career.

SRH would love to see their skipper smash a big one against RCB. He is in form and has been doing really well. However, a super knock which would blow away the opposition completely is being expected by the SRH fans.

Moises Henriques will also under the limelight although he is silently contributing to his team. The all-rounder has been effective both with the ball and the bat throughout this season.

Possibilities in the line-up

The loss was a pure shocker but it doesn’t appear that there will be drastic changes. It was just one of those horrible days where all the experiences, luck and talent goes down the drain, as you watch yourself getting humiliated completely.

Ashish Nehra may come in place of Mohammad Siraj. The Hyderabad fast bowler has shown a tendency to lose his rhythm completely once the batsmen have a go at him. Having a bowler of this kind against RCB’s lethal batting order would mean 40-50 runs as a gift which Warner clearly would not want to happen.

Head to Head:

Both teams have met once in the ongoing tournament and SRH had beaten its opposition on that occasion.

SRH is aiming for the second spot in the points table with four wins and three losses in seven matches, whereas, RCB has completely lost its plot having lost five out of their seven fixtures. The upcoming game surely will see SRH starting as the favourites but the home advantage and the aggressive nature of the RCB unit might spring some surprise.
