WWE Smackdown April 18, 2017 Analysis

This week’s Smackdown was a great show. It had a huge shocker, some good promos and some really entertaining matches. No doubt the blue brand did a better job than Raw this week.

Let us talk about the promos first. This week did not feature many promos but whatever it had were really valuable. The show starter was a promo from Charlotte Flair and the Smackdown Women’s champion Naomi. A match was booked by Shane McMahon between the two where if Charlotte she would be given a title shot next week. The match has actually won the Charlotte and next week she will meet Naomi for the title.

During this process, we say Natalya, Carmella and Tamina formed a stable after they all thought it was not fair to put Charlotte into the title frame instantly. And they continuously kept her meeting backstage. Their intention is cleared yet, but it looks like they are going to attack Charlotte next week to cost her the title opportunity. Becky Lynch was not seen this week. We think Becky will come out to help Charlotte against the trio. It might make a team between the two former teammates and it might also mark the face turn of Charlotte.

Apart from this match, there were four other matches that took place. Among them was a six pack challenge to determine the no 1 contender for the WWE championship at Backlash involving Dolph Ziggler, Luke Harper, Eric Rowan, Jinder Mahal, Mojo Rowley and Sami Zayn. The match was pretty entertaining and it ended in a shocking way. Jinder Mahal won the match and he will face Randy Orton or Bray Wyatt for the WWE championship at backlash! Can you believe this? Jinder Mahal on the main event scene? It was a shocking decision! Fans looked really confused seeing Jinder winning the match.

We are not saying Jinder did not deserve it, but is he good enough for the main event for a pay per view? Will the fans really buy tickets to see Jinder on the main event of a pay per view? But there is still a month time remains before Backlash, they can build Jinder in a better way. With the involvement of the Bollywood Boys, it seems they are planning something really interesting. If Jinder forms a stable with the two, it would be really great to see. Heel stables are always exciting to see.

The fans are complaining that Sami Zayn is still getting buried at Smackdown. But we would not say that. You see the way he lost the match? It is not a burial at all. You might argue why Jinder pinned Sami to win the match when there were other options? But that is not a burial either. DO you remember the six man hell in a cell match from Armageddon 2001? Kurt Angle picked up the win over the Rock when there was Rikishi in the match too. Sometimes losing a match pushes you too. He might not be getting any title opportunity instantly but we are sure Smackdown is planning something better for him.

The Shining Stars had been given a new gimmick. They are now addressed as the Colons. There is a rumour of Carlito returning to WWE and joining the Colons. Maybe this is the reason they turned into Colons. They have been given a good push by beating American Alpha. A win over the former tag team champions is a big push indeed but is it a good look for the Smackdown tag team division? Colons were undercard jobbers at Raw and we cannot remember if they ever won any match there. They did not get any tag team title championship match either. And they defeated the former Smackdown tag team champions in their debut match at Smackdown? Maybe a good look for the Colons but it proved how bad the Smackdown Live tag team division was.

The main event match between AJ Styles and Baron Corbin was good. It was booked for some twelve minutes. Baron Corbin did a good job in this match and even though he lost the match it pushed it really well. The match also promoted the US championship match between Kevin Owens or Chris Jericho and AJ Styles at Backlash.

Final Verdict – Overall, the show was very good. It was very entertaining. From top to bottom it was hard to put eyes off of it. Even though it did not feature big stars like Shinsuke Nakamura, Tye Dillinger and Becky Lynch in action, still they produced a great show. Hopefully, we will see something better next week.
