Bangladesh batsmen Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes have been fined by ICC for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during the second day of the second Test match at Colombo. Both have been docked 15 percent of their match fees as a fine.

Tamim was fined after the left-handed batsman showed his bat to the umpire, signalling that the ball has hit the bat instead of pad, when an LBW appeal was made whereas Kayes indicated umpire that the ball has hit his thigh pads and not the bat when an appeal for catch was made by Sri Lankans, read a release from ICC.

Both the players were found violating Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.

The charges were laid down by on-field umpires Aleem Dar, Sundaram Ravi, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge. Both the players admitted the charge led on them and hence no formal hearing was conducted for the same.

In addition to that, Article 7.3 of the new Code (effective 22 September 2016) have also come into play and one demerit point has also been added to their name. Till now, both Iqbal and Kayes have one demerit point to their name and if three more demerit points are added to their record in next 24 months, then the points will automatically be converted into a ban, as per the provisions.

As of now, Bangladesh seems to be a tricky situation as they are five down with a score of 214 and still trail by a margin of 124 runs. The first session of the third day will be crucial as Sri Lankan bowlers will try to get some early breakthroughs right at the start of the day whereas overnight batsmen Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib-al-Hasan will look to get close to Sri Lankan total.
