Bangladesh’s senior left-handed opening batsman Tamim Iqbal, who brought up his eight One-Day International century on Saturday, became the first Bangladeshi player to amass 10,000 International runs across all formats during first ODI against Sri Lanka at Dambulla.
Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to field first, as Mehedi Hasan Miraz earned his debut ODI cap.
The 28-year-old Iqbal played a significant role in Bangladesh’s overall hundredth Test match, scoring 49 and 82 in both innings to script a historic win, and further help the visitors level the two-match Test series one-all. In the first match at Galle, which Sri Lanka won by 259 runs, Iqbal scored 57 and 19.
The Chittagong-born Iqbal has played 162 ODIs and has amassed 5,120 runs at an average of 32.40, which also includes eight hundreds and 34 fifties. In 2009, Iqbal registered his highest ODI score of 154 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.
In 49 Tests played, Iqbal has scored 3,677 runs at an average of 39.53, including eight hundreds and 22 half-centuries. His highest score is 206, which came against Pakistan in 2015 at Khulna.
Also, in 55 Twenty20 Internationals played, Iqbal has posted 1,202 runs at an average of 24.04. He scored an unbeaten 104 off 63 balls against Oman in last year’s Twenty20 World Cup, his highest score in the shortest format.
