It looks like, the decision of making Alexa Bliss a champion turned out to be an utter controversial one. There are some serious fan backlashes going on over the sudden title change. On this past Sunday, Bayley faced Alexa Bliss for the raw women’s championship at the Payback PPV.
The notable thing here is that the match was contested at Bayley’s hometown of San Jose, California. WWE had conducted a PPV at the venue after quite a long time. Considering that Bayley’s title run has not got longer, it was least expected that she would drop the title, on the night.
Plus, Alexa Bliss is a new member of the Raw women’s division. She herself stated in an interview that she is looking to hold the championship, later this year and not so fast. Then the local media was also hyping up the night portraying the hometown girl is defending her title and it would come out as a successful attempt.
All of these factors turned out to be negligible since Alexa Bliss picked up the championship from Bayley. She also created history on that night by becoming the first woman to hold both the Raw and Smackdown women’s championship.
According to the reports from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a number of variables played a major role to come to the final decision of crowning the ‘wicked witch’ with the title. WWE creative has thought that Bayley has won the title in the month of February and held it for over two months. It was considered as quite a decent run for The Hugger and hence the run came to a halt.
Also, nowadays, Vince McMahon is going with a strange logic with the hometown favourites suffering the losses. Bayley was the latest victim to it. It was previously seen, as Sasha Banks getting defeated in Boston, Massachusetts and Charlotte Flair in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is being done to earn more sympathy to the character.
The writers were still confused whether the decision of making Alexa would be right or not. They went ahead with Bayley on Saturday Night and then again changed it to Bliss. Then on the night of Payback, the decision was changed for at least a couple of times before the final outcome.
Now, the ‘five-feet of fury’ is someone much trustworthy. With the bonafide heel persona she possesses, it would not take a long time for her to go over with the fans, quickly. So, the backlash should end with either a rematch or a new contender being named on Raw.
