After tasting immense success in India and West Indies with his franchises, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan is all set to own another franchise and this time in Cricket South Africa’s new Twenty20 league, according to reports.
Shah Rukh Khan owns Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League and according to reports in The Mumbai Mirror, his sports management has been in talks with Cricket South Africa as the actor has shown interest in owning a team either in Cape Town or Johannesburg. The CSA has put Johannesburg (two teams), Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Cape Town (two teams) for sale. The eight franchise owners will be announced at the Lord’s Cricket Ground here on June 19.
The report further claimed that the CSA targetted Shah Rukh Khan to cash in on his popularity and develop a fan-base for their new venture in the Indian market. Shah Rukh is also keen on buying a team in the upcoming league and recently sent his representative to South Africa for discussion with CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
Besides Shah Rukh, Delhi Daredevils have also reportedly put in a bid to buy a team. Chennai Super Kings and N Srinivasan have backed out but a couple of other IPL owners have also placed bids.
The new tournament, meanwhile, is currently billed as the T20 Global Destination League and is slated to start in early November and end on 16 December 2017.
West Indies stars Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Kieron Pollard and former England batsman Kevin Pietersen are among the tournament’s eight international marquee players. The others are former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, English duo Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy, and Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga.
