Watch: Jason Roy Becomes First Player To Be Given Out Obstructing The Field In T20I 1

While there is absolutely no denying that every cricketer loves to become a proud owner of any record but sometimes few records can be unwanted and England opener Jason Roy will no it better than anyone at this moment as he became one of the handful of batsmen in the history of the game to be given out obstructing the field during the second T20I between England and South Africa on Friday (June 23).

Chasing 171, England were cruising with Roy looking in mood and debutant Liam Livingstone giving him the company. The Three Lions were comfortably placed at 133 for 2 after the 15th over and were looking destined to overhaul the total. However, the match took an unexpected turn when Roy’s 67-run knock came to a disastrous end. The incident occurred on the first ball of the 16th over when Roy was sent back by Livingstone who refused to take a quick single. As expected, Roy hurried to make his ground only to see the subsequent throw at the stumps hit him on his heels.

As per the rules, if a player intentionally obstructs the field, he is given out. And with Roy running across the pitch to bring himself in the path of the ball, the South Africa players appealed.  The decision was sent to the third umpire and he gave his decision in the favour of the Proteas, citing Roy’s deliberate change of direction as the right-handed batsman became only the third English player to be dismissed in this fashion and the first ever in T20I.

Here is a clip of that dismissal:

Roy’s departure turned out to be a decisive moment in the match as England lost the match by three runs. The three-match series is now locked at 1-1.
