Cesc Fabregas has taken the levels in the Premier League to a whole new level since joining from Barcelona in the summer. In the first half of the season, Fabregas featured in 15 goals for the blues but since the New Year he has only influenced 2 goals for the blues.
Question that needs to be asked here is that Could Chelsea have seen this slump in form coming from Fabregas as this is not the first time it has happened with the Spaniard. He has this infamous history of losing his form as the season goes along.
This was touted as the main reason why Barcelona grew frustrated with Fabregas and decided to cash-in on him when Chelsea came calling. Out of the many reasons, Catalan club decided to highlight Fabregas’s poor second half of the seasons as the main factor for his exit from Camp Nou.
In one of the statements released at the time when Fabregas joined Chelsea, Barcelona spokesman said:
‘Despite glowing starts to each campaign, Cesc’s contributions to the cause gradually decreased as each season drew to a close.
‘From being someone who joined in with the attack, supplying and scoring goals, the magic tended to fade later on in each season. He only scored one, six and one goals in the last 24 games of each season.
‘For some reason, he was never as good in the second half of a season as in the first.’
Take a look at Fabregas’s form over the last few seasons
Chelsea fans need to take this stat seriously as this is not only happening while Cesc was with Barcelona. It stretches till the time when he played for Arsenal. We have always seen his numbers decrease in second half of the seasons.
As per the stats, Fabregas in 2009-10 had a 19 vs 9 ratio of contribution to goal in first and second half of the season. These numbers went to 9 vs 5 in 2010-11, then 13 vs 4 in 2011-12 season while it slumped to 14 vs 8 & 16 vs 5 n next two seasons.
This season the figure stands at 15 vs 2 and against PSG in the Champions League, Fabregas did not look like his old self as the French side ran Chelsea’s midfield riot. Jose Mourinho would want his main man to step up his game and have a say in Chelsea’s push for the Premier League title in coming weeks.
