The BCCI captains and coaches conclave that took place last night in New Delhi concluded with some important points being discussed by the representatives of each and every state. The meeting was headed by the head of BCCI’s Technical Committee Anil Kumble, who expressed satisfaction with the way the meeting took place.
The quality of umpires and the pitches used in the domestic matches has been main issue raised by the representatives. Punjab captain Harbhajan Singh and Jammu and Kashmir coach Sunil Joshi pointed out the lack of bounce for the spinners, which is one of the reason why the finger spinners are not successful in the domestic tournaments.
The captains and coaches raised a couple of key issues including the scheduling of matches, quality of balls and various formats. The best of this will be discussed in the technical committee meeting which is scheduled to be held in Kolkata later this month. They (captains and coaches) are happy in the way it is conducted, Anil Kumble said after the meeting got over.
The representatives also expressed their disappointment over the scheduling of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 competition. According to them, the main motive of the premier national T20 tournament is to help the cricketers get noticed by IPL franchises. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has been held at the end of the domestic calendar and often, the tournament’s super league stage has clashed with the IPL. Last year, the BCCI made it mandatory for all players contracted in the IPL to play for their respective teams in the zonal leagues of the tournament but allowed them to skip the super league and join their IPL franchises instead.
So they said that it would be better if the BCCI conduct the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament just before the IPL auction so that the players can be noticed buy the IPL team owners.
There was concern at the quality of balls used in the season. Constant change of balls had been an irritant, with bowlers from most teams complaining. The scheduling of Ranji matches was also discussed. It was felt that the teams in North Zone play their home matches first and then travel for the remaining encounters in order to counter the inclement weather that disrupts the schedule during peak winter.
Kumble was also requested to give a thought of having five fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the last 10 overs of a one-day match, which could help the bowlers. A request was also made to the BCCI to allow the players to display their State association logos on the helmet.
Key Points discussed at the conclave:
- Having the state logos on a player’s helmet
- Bouncy Pitches
- Improving the umpiring standards
- Domestic ODI and T20 tournaments to be held before the IPL auctions
- Five players outside the Inner Circle in the last ten overs of an ODI
- One Minus point for losing in the Ranji Trophy
