The day did not begin on a good note for Mithali Raj & Co., as the India skipper lost the toss and her England counterpart Heather Knight decided to bat first on a good batting pitch.
India’s miseries only compounded when Laurent Winfield and Tammy Beaumont added 47 runs for the first wicket. But the Indian eves soon clawed their way back into the match by taking three quick wickets to reduce the hosts from 47 for 0 to 63 for three.
Winfield was the first to depart when she was bowled by Rajeshwari Gayakwad for 24. 13 runs later, Poonam Yadav dismissed Beaumont and Knight in quick succession to pile more pressure on the hosts. Sarah Taylor and Natalie Sciver then put England on top by adding 83 runs for the fourth wicket but just when it looked like the duo would open their arms in order to accelerate, Jhulan Goswami dismissed Taylor (45) and Fran Wilson (0) on consecutive deliveries to leave England reeling at 146 for five in the 33rd over. 18 runs later, Goswami dismissed Sciver for 51 to put India firmly on top.
Katherine Brunt and Jenny Gunn then played hands of 34 and 25, respectively but could not guide England to a big total. And while only time will tell whether the Indian team likes the chase or not but former India opener Virender Sehwag certainly thinks so.
Delighted with the bowling performance, Sehwag tweeted:“Girls ko Chase Pasand hai. 229 to win the World Cup !”
