Chief of selector MSK Prasad was in a straightforward mood during the press conference following the announcement of the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. In recent times, the emphasis has been on firmly placed on the two-year master plan focussed on the 2019 Crocket World Cup to be held in England.
The debate for a much stronger, fitter and younger side crept up as soon as Indian owed out of the 2015 edition after the loss at the hands of hosts and eventual champions Australia. Since that time, the selectors have tried to balance the team with the mix of experiences and youthfulness.
But, in recent weeks, the approach of the selectors seems to be becoming stronger as the MSK Prasad led panel has now decided to ensure that the youngsters get the right amount of exposure before 2019. These tactics have directly raised questions surrounding the fitness of a couple of senior players like Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni.
As a proper measure to encounter the fitness debate, Prasad and the selection panel has decided to send out a stern message to the existing members of Team India and the probable that the fitness is the new important criteria for selection.
He highlighted that the players who do not meet the fitness parameters won’t be considered for selection as there is no dearth of talent.
“We are strictly laying down parameters for fitness for 2019 WC. Anyone who fails this fitness parameter will not be considered.
“Fitness will be a new benchmark, not skill. No shortage of skill in India. Anyone who fails will be out irrespective of performance.”
