Jonny Bairstow Aims to Make Big in ODI Fold for England 1

England wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow is hopeful of earning a regular deal while representing his national side owing to the long-run, particularly in the One-day International format.

“I’ve been in and out, one game here and there over a period of time, and at some time it’d be nice to get a decent run,” Bairstow was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Interestingly, Bairstow was speaking on the event of Royal London which further has been the valuable sponsor for England’s limited-overs cricket reiterated he had enjoyed his keeping.

“I’ve been delighted with my keeping this summer,” Bairstow said.

The 27-year-old Bairstow has vowed to give his best while donning the colours for the Three Lions. Before going into the five-match series, the hosts England will face the Windies in a solitary Twenty20 international fixture on Saturday (September 16).

“Not just one series but a couple of series that you can get your teeth stuck into – into a role, a side and a series,” Bairstow added.

Recently, Bairstow came off a decent performance in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2017, in a bid to establish himself as a frontrunner for England apart from the Test set-up. The ODI series will kick off on September 19 at Old Trafford, and the final ODI would be played at Rose Bowl on September 29.

“I finished the Champions Trophy opening the batting, which I like to think I’ve done alright. So wherever it is there’s an opportunity, hopefully I’ll get the nod,” Bairstow maintained.

The middle-order batsman has certainly a doubt in place over being a preferred choice, as the player for white-ball cricket, as he has been a reserve choice particularly in the limited-overs format.

“I don’t mind where I play and bat, as long as I’m in that XI,” Bairstow asserted.

The promising prospect Bairstow, who had fought hard for his place in the national set-up, is hopeful of getting a direct role in spite being inducted into the squad owing to the replacements.

“I’ve been really happy with it, it’s something I’ve worked very hard on. There was a lot said about it a year ago, and for people not to be talking about it, that’s what you want,” Bairstow further said.

In the recent past, Bairstow has been the second preference as a gloveman’s role while donning the national colours, believes he has come a long way to set a mark with the bat and behind the stumps.

“If I’m keeping in Tests, for 150 overs, instead of 50 or 20 overs, I’d like to think my keeping is up to scratch to keep in one-dayers as well,” Bairstow concluded.

The batsman in the form of Bairstow made his debut in 2011 against India at Cardiff, as has played 45 Tests, 27 One-day Internationals and 22 T20Is. He scored 2824 runs in five-day format followed by 690 in 23 innings of the 50-over format at an average of 25.16. The right-handed batsman smashed three hundred and 17 fifties in Tests followed by five half-centuries in ODIs and two in T20Is.
