Australia’s aggressive top-order batsman Aaron Finch, who returned to the cricket field in national colors during the recently-concluded five-match One-day International series against India in the subcontinent, was worried about his international career when he missed out on first two ODIs due to the injury.

“I thought after the Champions Trophy, getting 68 against England in the last game. I had a real opportunity to cement my spot and go on and get a big hundred and I didn’t do that,” Finch told Cricket Australia.

Finch nursed an injury on right-calf when he was representing English County Club Surrey following the early exit of Steven Smith led Australia in June this year.

The recurrence of injury during the training session in India forced him to warm the bench, to frustrate him more for featuring in the top-level competition.

“Then to … do my calf, just twinge it again, the day before the (first India warm-up) game, that was really, really frustrating. I thought right then that … I’ve blown it again,” Finch maintained.

After the surprising recovery from injury, Finch scored 124 followed by 94 in Bengaluru and 32 in Nagpur before scoring 50 in two Twenty20 Internationals as series decider was abandoned following the wet outfield in Hyderabad.

“You think about a lot of things like that when you’re injured,” Finch added.

However, the 30-year-old made his appearance in the third ODI at Indore and eventually emerged out as the leading run-scorer for Australia which further saw him registering his triple-figure mark on his comeback.

“So obviously I thought my position was quite vulnerable, and then to injure my calf playing for Surrey I thought ‘well that’s going to be my career over,” Finch asserted.

The Victorian batsman Finch amassed 250 runs at the staggering average of 83.33

Finch revealed it is quite tough to make a return following the injury while adding he was bound to wish all the luck to his replacement – to represent cricket and above all to win the game respectively.

“When you’re injured and somebody else comes in and takes your spot – and you hope the best for them because obviously, they’re there to win a game – (but) you have a lot of weird feelings,” Finch remarked.

Finch has endured pain in his leg. In the meantime, before having a little time to recuperate which further saw the Cricket Australia’s medical staff included physiotherapist Alex Kountouris of the Bupa Support team.

“To play well, win games for Australia, win every possible series in which I get the opportunity to represent Australia,” Finched concluded.

Finch is currently representing Victoria Bushrangers in the ongoing JLT Sheffield Shield first-class competition in which he hasn’t had early success as he scored 41 and nought in his team’s opener against Queensland in Brisbane while concluding he is aiming to make a big impact.
