When you speak about Ashish Nehra, the first thing which comes to mind is perseverance. He has been one of those bowlers whose career has always been pegged back due to injuries, but still, he hasn’t given up and has made a comeback in the Indian team more than perhaps any of the cricketers.
He has been a specialist T20 bowler in the last phase of his career, and he hasn’t disappointed. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and JaspritBumrah have taken up the responsibility in both ODI’s and T20I’s so Nehra feels it is the right time for him to go.
Though he hasn’t played as many matches for India as he would have liked especially in an international career spanning nearly 19 years, Nehra has been an influential figure in the Indian cricketing circles.
He is finally decided to hang up his boots, but it will be a fitting end to a hard-working career of a pacer as he will be playing in front of his home ground where has played most of his cricket as a young budding cricketer.
In his stop-start career, Nehra had many memorable moments. Let us now have a look at five such moments or achievements of Nehra in his career so far.
International debut at the age of 19
Nehra made his international debut when he hadn’t yet completed his 20th birthday. It was a big moment for the left-arm pacer who had been consistent for Delhi in the domestic circuit which led to his call-up. His Test debut against Sri Lanka was far from a fairytale one especially on a placid track which had nothing for the bowlers.
Nehra conceded 94 runs in his 28 overs and bagged his maiden Test wicket when he dismissed opener Marvan Atapattu with an impressive delivery. Both teams scored big as the match eventually ended in a tame draw.
