In what it could be termed as another brain fade moment in the subcontinent during the ongoing year, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has released the statement regarding the Dilruwan Perera’s decision; when he was trapped in front of the stumps by Mohammed Shami earlier on day four of the 1st Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to clarify the ambiguity surrounding the DRS appeal of Dilruwan Perera during the 3rd (4th) days (day’s) play of the 1st Test in Kolkotta (Kolkata) earlier this afternoon,” SLC said in a release.
The Sri Lankan all-rounder Perera did Steven Smith when he was declared out by the on-field umpire Nigel Llong, who straight away raised the dreaded finger.
During the 57th over of the Sri Lankan innings, Perera looked at the dressing room, seemingly in a bid to seek help regarding the decision.
However, after an inswinger from the right-arm fast bowler wrapped around the knee roll of Perera, the latter promptly asked for a review when he had a glare toward his team’s dressing room.
“Contrary to the assumptions made, there was no ‘message from the dressing room’ involved in the requested review,” the release added.
Interestingly, the replays suggested the couple of hands were up when Perera turned — to ask for a Decision Review System (DRS) which took many by surprise.
The decision of Perera asking for review turned out to be controversial one after complying with Llong’s decision for a couple of seconds before changing his mind entirely.
Moreover, the review did not sit well with the commentators, as fans were further enraged when the decision got overturned after the replays suggested ball pitched outside off.
“Dilruwan Perera had turned to leave the field when he heard Rangana Herath (batting partner) inquire from the on-feild (infield) umpire Nigel Long (Llong),” release maintained.
New Zealand’s Simon Doull and Indian commentator didn’t like the Perara’s gesture while questioning the turning back of the latter to opt for a review.
“If Sri Lanka have any reviews left tow which Mr Long (Llong) answered in the affirmative. It was then that Dilruwan requested the review,” the release concluded.
Dilruwan alongside Herath added 43 runs for the eighth wicket after former scored just five off 34 balls, as Sri Lanka was bundled out for 294 in 83.4 overs. Herath was the top scorer in the Islanders innings with 67 off 105 balls.
At the stumps on day four, India is leading by 49 runs in the second innings after openers in the form of Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul forged a 166-run stand for the first wicket after the deficit of 122.
Rahul is batting on 73 off 113 balls, as Cheteshwar Pujara faced nine balls to score two. The left-handed batsman Dhawan was dismissed on 94 off 116 balls. He smashed 11 boundaries and two sixes in his knock.
