Swansea City hold defending champions Chelsea FC for an entertaining 2-2 draw in the last game of the opening day. Oscar scored the opening goal from a blistering free-kick in the 23rd minute. Swansea’s Andre Ayew equalised in the 29th minute. The lead was restored for Chelsea within a minute as Federico Fernandez netted an accidental own goal. In the second half Thibaut Courtois was red carded due to a poor challenge on Bafetimbi Gomis. The French striker then scored from the penalty spot to seal the fate of the match.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho surpirised the world by fielding Diego Costa in the starting XI. The Blues attacked well from the beginning and kept the pressure on Swansea defense.
The deadlock was broken in the 23rd minute when Oscar’s blistering free-kick directly curled inside the goal. It was a craker of goal and Chelsea got the lead.
But Chelsea’s joys were shortlived as Swansea City’s new recruit Andre Ayew scored teh equaliser in the 29th minute. John Terry and Gary Cahill looked helpless in front of the goal as the Ghanian international netted his debut goal.
Chelsea again took the lead withing a minute as Argentine defender Federico Fernandez scored an accidental own goal within a minute. Willian attempted a shot at the goal which took a deflction of the defender’s head and went inside.
The teams went into the lemon break with the champions leading the proceedings.
Drama unfolded as the second half began. Chelsea custodian Thibaut Courtois was sent-off due to a poor challenge on Bafetimbi Gomis. Gomis approached a cross inside the penalty box and was one on one with the custodian. Courtois came forward and tackled Gomis vehemently inside the box. Red Card was flashed immediately and penalty was awarded. Gomis scored from the spot.
Chelsea from thereon tried deperately to find a winner but did not succeed. Radamel Falcao was fielded in the second half as Mourinho took an attacking approach. But Lukasz Fabianski was unstoppable.
