Cheteshwar Pujara’s marathon knock in Sydney finally came to an end on day two of the ongoing Test. However, the epic ended on a disappointing note as Pujara missed a well-deserved double-century by a whisker. The right-hander was batting on 193 when he offered an easy catch back to bowler Nathan Lyon. A double-century would have been the perfect end for one of the best knocks by an overseas batsmen in Australia,
As usual in the ongoing series, Pujara came out to bat on day quite early after KL Rahul flopped again and as usual he put India on top once again. The right-hander shared crucial stands with the likes of Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant to lay the foundation for a huge total.

Unsurprisingly, he has been garnering praise from all over for his heroic knock. And Virender Sehwag also followed suit. Highly active on Twitter, the former India opener praised Pujara in his own amicable style. The legendary batsman loves to play with words on Twitter and did something similar for Pujara too, writing:
“Chitt ke Ishwar, another name for Lord Shiva – Cheteshwar Pujara. Destroyed Australia’s chances in the series, most number of balls batted by an Indian in a series against Australia. Outstanding 193, memorable knock,” he wrote.

Pujara, meanwhile, joined an elite list . which includes the likes of Virat Kohli and batting great Sunil Gavaskar. He is now one of the few visiting batsmen to have scored three or more centuries in a series in Australia. Pujara has emulated Alastair Cook, Michael Vaughan, Chris Broad, Gavaskar, Eddie Barlow and Jack Hobbs by scoring his third century. Notably, Virat Kohli, Wally Hammond and Herbert Sutcliffe have scored four tons in a series in Australia.

He also became the fifth Indian batsman after Rahul Dravid (1203 in 2003/04), Vijay Hazare (1192 in 1947/48), Virat Kohli (1093 in 2014/15) and Sunil Gavaskar (1032 in 1977/98) to face more than 1000 balls in a Test series in Australia.
