The Indian national cricket team finished the ODI series in New Zealand with a 35-run victory at Westpac Stadium (Wellington). India won the five-match away ODI series by the 4-1 margin.

The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to bat first after winning the toss. Struggling on 18/4, the Indian middle-order batsmen played very well and stretched the innings to 252 runs before losing all wickets. In reply, the hosts were losing their wickets in regular intervals, and finally, they managed only 217 runs.

Brief Score: India – 252 in 49.5 overs (Ambati Rayudu 90, Hardik Pandya 45; Matt Henry 4/35)

New Zealand – 217 in 44.1 overs (James Neesham 44, Kane Williamson 39; Yuzvendra Chahal 3/41)

Result – India won by 35 runs

Here are some of the statistical highlights of the match:

i) India lost their first four wickets for just 18 runs.

  • India’s lowest ODI runs against New Zealand for the first four wickets. Their previous lowest was 19 at Bulawayo on 26 August 2005. 

 

ii) Indian batsmen added 234 runs for the last six wickets.

  • Fifth most runs added by the last seven batsmen in any particular ODI innings.

 

iii) MS Dhoni lost his wicket for just one run.

  • In his last four ODI innings (including this one), MS Dhoni lost his wicket for the first time. He remained not out in his previous three straight ODI innings.

iv) India managed to score 252 runs in 49.5 overs.

  • Best ODI total for India at the Westpac Stadium (Wellington). Their previous record was 216 in 49.4 overs against New Zealand on 31st January 2014.  

 

v) New Zealand right-arm pacer Matt Henry finished the game with the bowling figures of 10-1-35-4

  • The fourth best bowling figure by a New Zealand right-arm pacer against India in New Zealand.

vi) India bundled out New Zealand for 217 runs.

  • Lowest completed second innings ODI total for New Zealand against India in New Zealand. Their previous lowest was 220 at Basin Reserve (Wellington) on 6 March 1990. 

 

vii) Four New Zealand batsmen lost their wickets through the lbw.

  • It was the third time when four New Zealand batsmen lost their wickets through the lbw in the same ODI innings against India. The first two similar incidents happened in 2003, both in India (Cuttack and Hyderabad). There was no incident when more than four New Zealand batsmen lost their wickets through the lbw in the same ODI innings against India.
