Ranatunga brothers, Arjuna and Nishanta, suffered humiliating defeats in the President and vice-President election of the SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) on Sunday.
The election was held at the Sports Ministry today with high security. Thilanga Sumathipala beat Nishantha Ranatunga for the President’s election. The current deputy speaker of parliament, Sumathipala got 88 votes while Nishantha managed only 56 votes.
Just like Nishantha, his brother Arjuna Ranatunga also suffered defeat in the vice-President election against M Mathivanan and Jayantha Dharmadasa. Both of the winners against Arjuna were fighting from the Sumathipala’s team. Arjuna Ranatunga is currently serving Ports and Shipping Ministry.
The ICC (International Cricket Council) has been pressurizing the Sri Lankan government to organise democratic elections as early as possible. The Lankan government appointed a probe committee to look into allegations of corruption and mismanagement after dismissing the previous administration. The position of Secretary has also gone to a member of the Sumathipala camp, Mohan de Silva.
Previously, Sumathipala and de Silva had worked together in the same position.
