On Wednesday (6 February), New Zealand won the first T20I of the three-match T20I series at Westpac Stadium (Wellington). With this victory, New Zealand has taken the 1-0 lead of the series with two to go.

After winning the toss, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to field first. New Zealand scored a massive total of 219/6 in 20 overs. In reply, the visiting side India only managed to score 139 runs before losing their all wickets.

  • Colin Munro became the fourth New Zealand batsman to score 5,000 or more runs in the T20 career. The other three in this list are Brendon McCullum (9,922 runs), Martin Guptill (6,301 runs) and Ross Taylor (5,731 runs).

iii) By the end of the match, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson reached 1,036 runs as a T20I captain.

  • Third most run-scorer as a T20I captain. The top two in this list are Faf du Plessis (South Africa) and MS Dhoni (India) who have scored 1,252 runs and 1,112 runs respectively.

  • Most runs scored by a wicketkeeper-batsman in away T20Is. MS Dhoni surpassed former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum who scored 521 runs in away T20Is.  

 

ii) Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni has scored 1,526 runs in T20I career.

  • MS Dhoni became the second wicketkeeper-batsmen to score 1,500+ runs in T20I career. Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad is on top of this list with 1,918 T20I runs. 
  • MS Dhoni became the fourth Indian batsman to score 1,500+ T20I runs. The other three cricketers are Rohit Sharma (2,238 runs), Virat Kohli (2,167 runs) and Suresh Raina (1,605 runs).

iii) New Zealand pacer Tim Southee has taken 37 T20I wickets at home.

  • Highest wicket-taker in home T20I. Tim Southee surpassed the record of Bangladesh left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan who has picked up 35 T20I wickets at home.

  • It was the largest T20I defeat (by runs) for India. Their previous largest T20I defeat was by 49 runs against Australia at Bridgetown on 7 May 2010.
