Bangladesh Cricket team skipper Mahmudullah Riyad revealed that he and his teammates couldn’t sleep properly on the night of the terror attack during Friday prayers on a mosque at Christchurch. In the wake of the event, New Zealand Cricket in discussion with Bangladesh Cricket Board have called off the third Test. The Bangladesh side returned to their country last night with fear still instilled in them.

Could not sleep

Bangladesh players, who were about to enter one of the attacked mosques reached the place only a few minutes after fire opened and narrowly escaped. The attack killed 49 people and injured many which compelled New Zealand Prime Minister calling it as one of the darkest days in their history. Speaking of the incident, Mahmudullah said they felt fortunate to escape the shooting. He also admitted he didn’t expect this kind of event that in a country like New Zealand. The senior batsman, without getting into the details of that incident, said that it had left the team shocked and the players had a sleepless night having narrowly escaped from the scene of the attack.

As long as we were in the room, the only thing propped up in our mind is how lucky we are… it had happened in a country like New Zealand which was really unexpected,” Mahmudullah said.

I cannot describe what is going inside us, what we have seen,” Mahmudullah said. “The only thing I can say is that we are very lucky. With all of your prayers, our family members’ prayers, parents’ prayers now we could return here alive. I could not describe that scene. I, personally, and all of us in the team could not sleep properly,” the skipper continued.

Following the incident, the Bangladesh Cricket Board have said that they will not send their team is the touring fails to provide adequate security. They will next feature in the ICC World Cup starting from May 30 in England and Wales.
