On Saturday, the long-serving West Indies cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul announced his retirement from international cricket. He was one of the famous and respected batsmen in the world. Chanderpaul played 268 ODIs for West Indies where he scored 8,778 runs in ODI with the average of 41.60.

Chanderpaul played numerous great innings in ODIs. He made 11 hundreds and 59 fifties in his ODI career.

Here are Chanderpaul’s top 5 ODI innings in the following:

5)  77 against Sri Lanka at Hobart (3rd January 1996): – After winning the toss, Sri Lanka sent the Caribbean team into bat first. In the tough batting condition where all batsmen were struggling, Chanderpaul made a crucial 77 runs which finally proved a match-winning knock. Sri Lanka bowled out at just 124 runs in the reply of West Indies’ 194 runs. West Indies won the match by 70 runs and Chanderpaul grabbed the man of the match award despite the 5-wickets haul of the Caribbean fast bowler Ottis Gibson.

4)  87* against Kenya at Nairobi (Gym) (18th August 2001): – Chasing a small target of 193 runs against Kenya, West Indies had come under pressure after losing 3 quick wickets in just 17 runs on the board. Later, Chanderpaul guided that innings very well and made a match-winning knock of unbeaten 87 runs. He was selected for man of the match award.

3)  112* against England at Guyana (22nd March, 2007):- West Indies decided to bat first after winning the toss in this match. After falling two openers very quickly, Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan made a great 133 runs partnership for 3rd wicket. After the dismissal of Sarwan (74), other remaining Caribbean batsmen failed to put any fight in that innings but Chanderpaul continued his innings till the end. Chanderpaul remained unbeaten at 112 runs and put a respected total of 264/8. West Indies won the match by 21 runs in that match.

2)  149* against India at Nagpur (21st January, 2007):- Chasing a massive total of 339 runs in 50 overs against India, opener Chanderpaul played a great knock of unbeaten 149 runs. But except the opening partnership, other batsmen failed to give him support for chasing that massive total. At the end, West Indies felt 14 runs short from the India’s total (338/3) but Chanderpaul was selected for man of the match award.

1)  150 against South Africa at East London (24th January, 1999):- It was probably Chanderpaul’s best ever innings in his long ODI career. After winning the toss, South Africa sent West Indies into bat first. Except opener Chanderpaul, the top-order batsmen collapsed very quickly. After 46/3, Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper made a massive 226 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. Chanderpaul scored 150 runs while Hooper made 108 runs and West Indies put a respective and good total on the scoreboard of 292 runs. West Indies won the match by 3 runs and Chanderpaul was awarded man of the match for his outstanding knock.
