After Anthony Martial, Gareth Bale and Radamel Falcao, Arsenal superstar Mesut Ozil’s transfer documents have now been leaked on the football whistleblower website Football Leaks.
Ozil’s former club Real Madrid negotiated a buy-back option from Arsenal for Mesut Ozil on a deal that is worth €50 million, according to a transfer document that was published on the website.
According to the document Real Madrid have a 48-hour first option on Mesut Ozil should Arsenal agree on a sale for the silky midfielder to another Spanish club. However, if Arsenal agree to sell Ozil to a non-Spanish club, this clause is not applicable and Madrid would have to, at least, match the deal that had been agreed elsewhere.
Arsenal fans must have some idea about this clause as it is very similar to the one Arsenal had inserted in the sale of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona.
The total fee for Ozil is around £42 million as reported by various websites but the standout feature is that the last €6 million is paid in €1 million instalments every year Arsenal qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
According to the Telegraph Sport this strongly suggests that Arsenal have been actively writing into their player contracts a clause that will mitigate the financial loss of ever not qualifying for the Champions League
The €50 million is broken down into three instalments. It includes an initial €24 million payment on the day he was signed, €15 million was then payable on Sept 30, 2014 and €5 million a year later.
Madrid also a secured a potentially sizeable sell-on clause should Ozil be sold to another Spanish club for more than €50 million which would entitle them to 33 per cent of any profit made in addition to the original fee.
Funnily enough, there is a confidentiality clause in the document that forbids either party from disclosing the details of the deal to a third party without the prior written consent of the other party.
