New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is in an excellent form with the bat in the ongoing Cricket World Cup. During the first semi-final of this tournament, Williamson equalled the record of most runs by a captain in a single CWC edition.

Kane Williamson is known as one of the top-class batsmen in the present world cricket. He is showing his pure class in the ongoing 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. The right-handed batsman has played a crucial role for his team to secure a spot for the semi-final of this tournament.

On Tuesday (9th July), New Zealand have met with India in the first semi-final of this tournament. After deciding to bat first, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson scored a crucial 67 runs off 95 balls. The right-handed batsman hit six boundaries in this innings.

New Zealand captain equals Mahela Jayawardene’s record

Adding this innings, Williamson has scored 548 runs in eight innings in the 2019 CWC (average 91.33). He has hit two centuries and two half-centuries in this tournament. It is the joint most runs for a captain in a single edition of Cricket World Cup.

Earlier in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene scored these record runs. He scored 548 runs in 11 innings with an average of 60.88 (one century and four half-centuries).

Australian captain Aaron Finch and Indian captain Virat Kohli are also chasing this record. In the ongoing 2019 CWC, Finch has scored 507 runs in nine innings, and Kohli has scored 442 runs in eight innings (before his semi-final innings). While Finch is 41 runs behind of Jayawardene and Williamson, Kohli is 106 runs away from the same record.

Kane Williamson is the most run-scorer for New Zealand in a single CWC edition

On the other hand, Kane Williamson has created another record in Cricket World Cup history. The right-handed batsman is now the most run-scorer as a New Zealand batsman in a single CWC edition. Martin Guptill was the previous record holder who scored 547 runs (nine innings) in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Guptill and Williamson are the only batsmen for New Zealand who have scored 500+ runs in a CWC edition.
