Greg Chappell, who was surrounded by controversies during his tenure as Indian head coach, has expressed that MS Dhoni is the best captain that India has ever produced. Chappell has closely seen the wicketkeeper-batsman growing as a prominent player for India. He was assigned as the head coach of the team after a year Dhoni made his debut i.e, in 2005.

In the recent interaction with IANS, Greg Chapell spoke highly about MS Dhoni as a cricketer as well as a captain. He said that the former Indian cricketer was an easy-going and a modest person. Dhoni was unpretentious and was confident about his skills, as per the former Aussie cricketer.

“My experience with Dhoni the cricketer and Dhoni the person were positive. He was very easy to work with because he was open and forthright. There was no false modesty with Dhoni; if he thought he could do something, he was confident enough to say that he could,” Greg Chappell said.

According to Chappell, MS Dhoni is up there with former great captains Michael Brearley, Ian Chappell, Mark Taylor, and Clive Lloyd. Former head coach labels the World Cup winner as the most inspirational captain of the cricket history.

“In my opinion, he is the best Indian captain that I have seen and I would put him in the highest bracket of captains and leaders in the game in my experience. He is up there with Michael Brearley, Ian Chappell, Mark Taylor, and Clive Lloyd as the most inspirational captains of the past 50 years,” he added. 

Dhoni Exceeded His Own Expectations: Chappell

On being asked did Dhoni live up to Chappell’s expectation, he expressed that Dhoni exceeded all the expectations, including his own. Chappell opines that Dhoni incredibly utilised his immense skills to become one of the great all-rounders of his era.

He exceeded any expectations that I had and he may have exceeded his own expectations. It is a great credit to him that he utilised his immense skills to become one of the great all-rounders of his era and an inspirational leader,” He said. 

The three ICC trophies-holder MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket earlier this month. He will not be seen in the Indian jersey again but the mercurial cricketer will be playing for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL edition.
