All the top-five European leagues except the English Premier League are enjoying a good break for a week or two during a winter period. English Premier League will continue their traditional Boxing Day fixtures and two more matches after that despite a Covid-19 outbreak in the United Kingdom.
Top German football league Bundesliga concluded their half-season last weekend with no major surprises. The winter break will be in place for more than two weeks, not-so-good news for football fans. Both Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen lost their last match before going into the winter break and gifted league title to Bayern Munich, for the record 10th consecutive times.
Bundesliga 2021-22 Standings:
As expected Bayern Munich are top of the table with 9 points lead, so once again the title race is over at the end of the half-season. The Bavarians are glued to the top of the table with 43 points from the opening 17 league matches. They are 9 points above 2nd placed Borussia Dortmund. German Champions have scored 56 goals in just 17 league matches and conceded the lowest goals in the league, 16 only.

Bayer Leverkusen seemed to mount a title challenge at the early stages of the season. But they suffered three defeats in four December fixtures. This dip in form has knocked them out of the title race and now they will be fighting for the top-four finish this season. Gerardo Seoane’s men sit in 4rd position with 28 points, 15 points behind Bayern Munich, and on a level with 5th placed Hoffenheim. Borussia Dortmund also lost their grip on the title race this month. They managed to win just 2 league matches in the last five and suffered defeat against Bayern Munich at home at the start of this month. The Balck and Yellows are struggling for consistency this season as well despite some impressive individual performances from Erling Haaland and Marco Reus.
SC Freiburg and TSG Hoffenheim emerged as surprise packages this season. Both teams finished in the bottom half of the table last season but now both underdogs are competing for the top-four finish. Freiburg sit in the 3rd position with 29 points, thanks to their victories over Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund this season. Hoffenheim are on the level with Bayer Leverkusen with 28 points and sit at 5th position due to lower goal difference.
League giants RB Leipzig are suffering this season as a huge disappointment for the fans. They raised the bars last season after finishing as runners-up, also finished the last three seasons in the top-4 position. They now sit at 10th position in the league table with just 22 points, 6 points behind 4th placed Bayer Leverkusen and 5 points above the relegation zone. Wolfsburg are also suffering this season despite finishing in top-four last season. They have lost the last five league matches in the row and now sit in 13th position in the league table with 20 points, just 3 points safe to the relegation battle.
