India wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik doesn’t think that India needs to follow England’s template in ODI cricket. He believes that India needs to find ways in its own way.
India lost the third ODI against South Africa by 4 runs at Cape Town as they conceded the series by 0-3. There is lots of criticism over India’s approach in the 50-over format as they lost the third consecutive series outside Asia and two of them ended as a whitewash.

“There are lots of hungry players in India like Deepak Chahar who is waiting for the opportunity”- Dinesh Karthik
England rebranded their ODI approach after the 2015 ODI World Cup as they go with a slam-bang approach in every match to set a score above par. But Karthik feels that it won’t work for India as Indian batters play more orthodox cricketing shots.
“India have a different policy than England when it comes to ODI cricket. I don’t think we will get slam-bang swashbuckling openers like England. The problem with it is that if you do it in India, you do it for two games and then get out trying to do something fancy, then the knife is on your neck. Among all openers, I have not seen anyone go at it from ball one barring Prithvi Shaw.
“Only difference is that Shaw plays proper cricketing shots. So, I don’t think we need go the England way post-2015 World Cup.” Karthik said.

India has lots of issues to address in ODIs as they are struggling to take wickets in the powerplay while spinners ain’t providing them crucial breakthroughs.
However, they put on a better performance with a slightly fresh bowling attack on Sunday. As Deepak Chahar provided India with a rare breakthrough in powerplay while he smashed a 31-ball fifty batting to take his team home.
“You’ve got to understand that there are a lot of hungry players in India Deepak Chahar, the way he bowled, he batted, then Shikhar Dhawan for example, time is running out for him according to a lot of people, even he wouldn’t know why. He has been doing so well in ODIs for India, again here he is the leading run-scorer.” Karthik said.
“That’s all you can do as a batter. That’s hunger there again, wanting to be a part of Team India, wanting to be a part of the setup, giving everything he has got. But, the question is will the players with the hunger be allowed to carry on because of other factors like age, fitness, and others. Those decisions will be taken in the near future.” he added.
India’s next ODI series will be against West Indies starting from February 6.
