Luka Modric, who spent eight years alongside his teammate Casemiro has opened up about the latter’s move to Manchester United. Casemiro formed arguably the best midfield with Modric and Toni Kroos at Real Madrid who dominated the game for the last eight years. The Brazilian has now split the triad after signing for Erik ten Hag’s Man United.

Casemiro has penned a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option of another year after Real Madrid and Manchester United announced they have agreed a deal for him on August 20. United paid the Los Blancos a lucrative fee of £60 million, with another £10 million in add-ons for the acquisition of the 30-year-old. Casemiro will reportedly pocket £350,000-per-week in wages, making him one of the highest earners at Old Trafford.

Modric praises Casemiro’s legacy at Real Madrid

Real have began their life after Casemiro with a thumping win in the La Liga against Celta Vigo. The Los Blancos downed Celta 4-1, thanks to the strikes from Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr, Fede Valverde and Luka Modric himself. Carlo Ancelotti brought in summer recruit Aurelien Tchouameni to replace Casemiro who was undergoing his medical in Manchester.

Modric was without his usual partners in the midfield, with Casemiro away and Kroos too missing the game with a minor knock. However, Modric carried out his routine by scoring one and assisting another in Real’s win over  Celta. But the 36-year-old couldn’t contain his emotions in the post match interview on being asked about Casemiro’s departure.

Speaking to Movistar+, Modric said: “The Casemiro thing is a shame, we have made history with him, he has been a fundamental piece for us and we will miss him as a footballer and as a person, but he is part of football and each one of us will give even more in things that he did.”

Modric’s disappointment is justified given the successful years he has spent with the Brazilian at Santiago Bernabeu. The midfield trio of Kroos-Modric-Casemiro won a staggering five Champions League titles at Real, including the famous three-peat. They further lifted another 13 trophies, establishing a force to reckon with in their time at the club.
Casemiro racked up 336 appearances for Real after joining from Sau Paulo back in 2013. After spending his initial years at Real Madrid Castilla and at Porto on loan, the midfielder finally won his place in the Los Blancos’ first team and never looked back. With 31 goals and 29 assists to his name at Real, Casemiro is leaving behind a legacy at the club.
He will now reunite with his former teammates from Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane at Old Trafford. The two landed together in Manchester last summer, with Varane switching from Real and Ronaldo arriving from Juventus. Ten Hag will hope his new recruit finally resolves the midfield crisis at the club and turn the tide of their disastrous start to the season.
