Following Australia’s memorable win against India in the Indore Test, the cricket fraternity has started talking about the possibility of Steve Smith becoming the full-time Test captain once again.

With Pat Cummins at home due to family reasons, Steve Smith led Australia in the third Test and did a brilliant job as a captain. Throughout the game, he made sure to keep Australia on the front foot as they beat India by 9 wickets. Australia’s chances of winning any Test in the ongoing series looked almost impossible following their performances in the first two Tests.

They lost the series-opener by an innings and 132 runs before losing the second one by 6 wickets. However, Steve Smith led his team brilliantly and guided them to a win that helped them seal a place in the final of the ICC World Test Championship.

Steve Smith as full-time Test captain:

While the cricketing world would have definitely loved to see Steve Smith captain Australia in more Tests especially after his captaincy in Indore, he has played down ambitions of becoming the full-time Test captain. Smith is currently the full-time vice-captain of the Test team but has made it clear that he has no intentions of replacing Cummins as the captain.

“My time is done. It’s Pat’s team now. I’ve obviously been able to stand in this week, obviously in tough circumstances with Patty going home. Our thoughts are still with him back home,” Steve Smith said after the Indore Test win.

“But India is a part of the world I love captaining … it’s probably my favourite place in the world to captain. Every ball is an event and therefore can dictate what happens after, which is something that I really love and you’ve got to be ahead of the game.

“So I thought I did it well this week and it was good fun,” he added.

Meanwhile, Smith is likely to lead Australian in the fourth Test as well as Cummins is unlikely to return to India before the game gets underway. The final Test of the series is scheduled to begin on March 9.
