Fans have flocked the social media with hilarious reactions after a reporter brutally questioned Manchester United Wout Weghorst post his wasteful performance for the Netherlands against Gibraltar. The Netherlands defeated minnows Gibraltar 3-0 in their EURO 2024 qualifying match on Monday night in Rotterdam, but squandered a lot of opportunities which could have inflated the scoreline.

While Ronald Koeman’s team fired a staggering 51 total shots during the game, 39 of them were off-target. Weghorst, 30, made nine efforts over the course of the 90 minutes, but he was unable to score; in contrast, Manchester City defender Nathan Ake scored twice.

Would you have scored a goal? – reporter seems to mock Manchester United striker

The Manchester United striker was questioned about his subpar finishing in a post match interview he attended. Weghorst’s output has been questioned week-in week-out in Manchester as since joining the Red Devils, he has scored just two goals in 18 appearances. While United manager Erik ten Hag has praised the 30-year-old for his playmaking skills (despite the Dutch forward collecting just two assists), fans at Old Trafford have expressed their frustration at the Burnley man.

However, the reporter who interviewed Weghorst seemed too straightforward while discussing the striker’s struggles throughout the game. Many were shocked by the way one question was posed to him.

The reporter asked Weghorst: “Wout, imagine we would have continued this game for another 48 hours. Would you have scored a goal?”

To which the Manchester United man plainly replied: “Good question. At least I would have had more time. I did my best, but time was up.”

In response to the interaction between Weghorst and the reporter on social media, fans reacted:

However, Weghorst gave a n honest evaluation of his performance after the game. He told ESPN:

“There were a few situations where I was close, but always just not. It’s just… just s***. Bad luck? Whether it’s just bad luck. Ultimately, it’s also quality. You have to be honest about that too. You can call it bad luck. But that last ball of mine was allowed in. As a striker, you know that you can score in these kinds of matches. Then you can also remain standing for the entire match, then you would like to repay the trust. That sucks.”

The Netherlands’ unimpressive performance against Gibraltar followed a humiliating 4-0 loss to France on Friday. However, Koeman’s men could at least head back to their respective clubs with a smile and relief after the Gibraltar win. Weghorst will continue his journey with Manchester United as they resume their league campaign on club football resumption against Newcastle United on April 2.
