Sadio Mane’s life hasn’t exactly gone according to plan since he moved from Liverpool to Bayern Munich last summer.  Following six incredibly successful seasons with the Reds, where he won the Premier League and the Champions League, Mane decided to take on a new challenge in German football by moving to Bayern last summer in a £35 million deal.

Even though Sadio Mane only had one year left on his Liverpool contract at the time of the deal, the Bundesliga club appeared to have made a wise decision. In the 2022 Ballon d’Or race, the winger had recently lost to Karim Benzema after another successful season for the Reds, during which he scored 23 goals and provided five assists across all competitions.

Sadio Mane vows to emulate Liverpool heroics ‘soon’ at Allianz Arena

While there was shock across Merseyside after Sadio Mane left Liverpool, it was all smiles in Bavaria where he arrived to play for Bayern. However, since joining the Bundesliga champions, Mane has found it difficult to reach those same heights which he achieved at Liverpool due to a leg injury that has slowed down his progress there.

By mid-November, Mane had a strong start in Germany, scoring 11 goals and dishing out four assists. The winger’s heroics rejoiced the Bayern fans who were still coping from the departure of Robert Lewandowski as the striker moved to Barcelona in the same transfer window.

As Mane continued to prove his mettle for his new side, he sustained an injury to a tendon in his right fibula during Bayern’s final game ahead of the World Cup break against Werder Bremen. The 30-year-old had to undergo surgery on the fibula which prevented him from competing in the World Cup in Qatar for Senegal.

Sadio Mane has now recovered fully and returned to the team last month after spending the previous three months on the sidelines. Yet he hasn’t scored since and has only contributed one assist for the Bundesliga leaders. When asked by Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany whether Bayern fans would witness the same guy that terrorised the defences for Liverpool, Mane simply replied: “Soon. I promise you.”

With Tuesday’s goalless draw against Chelsea, Liverpool are now ninth in the Premier League as they continue to struggle this season without Sadio Mane. Although the Reds invested heavily to replace the Senegal international, bringing Darwin Nunez from Benfica on a club record fee of £85m in the summer, and hijacking Manchester United’s deal for Cody Gakpo for £36m in the winter market, both the forwards are yet to adapt life in England.

Jurgen Klopp has come under immense pressure since Liverpool face a real threat of missing out on Champions League football for next season. There are speculations around the German’s future at Anfield, but Mane expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to regain their form last month and backed his ex manager. He told BILD:

“Liverpool will be back. I’m convinced they will overcome this situation. They had many injuries and tough tests, but Jurgen Klopp is definitely the right man. He will lead Liverpool back up, from this season – the players love him.”
