Liverpool has had a positive start to their pre-season and has not conceded a single goal in the three games they played so far.
They have another friendly to go before they set off to the United States for the friendly tournament and the squad already looks stronger than it was in the previous season.
However, the manager has been rocked by a series of injuries to key players in the last few day. Joe Gomez, the youngster who impressed under Brendan Rodgers is not available for the start of the next season through injury while French international Mamadou Sakho also picked up a niggle that might keep him out for up to a month.
But the biggest of them was seeing the summer signing Joel Matip leave the field against Wigan in deep discussion with the medical staff. Though not an official word is out on the seriousness of the injury but Klopp has had enough and is already close to agreeing on a deal with another defender from Europe.
The papers this morning were full of news claiming that Liverpool is closing in on Augsburg defender Ragnar Klavan.
It is revealed that Klavan is happy to move to Merseyside to play the second fiddle to Sakho or Dejan Lovren, the partner of Joel Matip at the heart of the Liverpool defense next season and mainly to fill in when injuries hit the squad.
At 30 years of age, Klavan is an experienced defender who has most attributes that can make him successful in the Premier League. He has been on the radar for Klopp even in his time at Bundesliga and the manager feels that having him in the squad next season will help the club during contingencies.
Though no official word is out yet, it is revealed that a deal worth £4.2m is already stuck between the two clubs and that the player is happy to make the move this summer.
It is an interesting move from Klopp but one that has been forced on him. 3 of his central defenders are currently not available eve for training and if this continues, the manager will be kicking himself for letting the likes of Kolo Toure leave, who would have helped the club in these situations.
Klavan is an exciting prospect on his own and can easily fight for a place in the starting XI at least for the cup games and Klopp will hope that his experience helps his squad not only on the field but also in the dressing room.
At just £4.2m, Klavan is more than just a bargain and can easily become a fan favorite at Anfield. Do you think that the Estonian international has what it takes to excel in the Premier League?
