Mahendra Singh Dhoni received lavish praise after he produced an incredible stumping to get rid of Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Suresh Raina, who was bowling the over, bowled one down the leg side. The batsman went for a flick and lost his balance but with both feet inside the crease. But Dhoni affected an outrageous stumping to dismiss the batsman. In an attempt to balance himself, the batsman raised his feet for a nanosecond but it was enough for Dhoni to dislodge the bails.
Well, the fans went gaga over Dhoni’s stumpings but little did they know that a similar act was done about 11 years ago by another wicketkeeper in international cricket. It was done by former England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones when his team was playing against South Africa in 2005.
Batting first England scored 270 with the help of century from Kevin Pietersen. South Africa gave a solid reply and were looking all set to win the match when only one run was needed off the last ball. Kabir Ali was bowling the over and Andrew Hall was on strike. The bowler was struggling to get his length right throughout the match but he bowled a gem of a final delivery. And his effort was supported brilliantly by Jones.
With only one needed, Jones stood up to prevent a scampered bye. His work was made difficult when Ali bowled a perfect yorker. However, he collected the ball cleanly and waited for the batsman to lose his balance. And when the batsman took his feet out of the crease for a fraction of a second, Jones dislodged the balls to help England tie the match.
