Despite the fact, Liverpool have still got six games to play this month and one of their best players Sadio Mane will miss the entirety of January at the AFCON, it looks unlikely that Klopp will be signing a first-teamer to bolster the ranks.
That’s after the Daily Mail ruled out a move for Liverpool’s apparent no.1 target Quincy Promes, claiming Klopp has decided not to pursue the talented Dutch winger who currently plies his trade for Spartak Moscow.
With Coutinho returning from injury and Daniel Sturridge ready and available, it appears the Reds boss has decided a big money signing is not necessary – although the Merseysiders still appear to be pretty short.
Quincy Promes is a very versatile attacker. At Dutch clubs Go Ahead Eagles and FC Twente, as well as the Dutch national team, he has played in many different positions across the midfield and front line.
What will interest Liverpool fans the most, however, is that the position of right winger seems to bring out the best in Promes.
With Mane unavailable in the near future, and with plenty of options down the middle for Klopp, Promes could be the one to bring that little bit of extra attacking power for Liverpool in the second half of the season.
Playing as a right winger, Promes is often able to surprise his opposition by either cutting inside and shooting (in the style of Holland teammate Arjen Robben) or by taking his man on and crossing from out wide.
In this regard, Promes seems to combine the qualities of a modern inside forward with the skills of an old fashioned winger.
Although the right wing seems like his preferred position, Promes is actually capable of playing from the left or the middle as well.
At the Dutch national team, Promes is often shuffled around the pitch, depending on who else is playing. His versatility is one of the main reasons manager Danny Blind is so happy to have him in the squad.
With Danny Ings injured long-term, Klopp has Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sturridge and Divock Origi competing for three positions this month – with the only backup inexperienced young talents like Sheyi Ojo and Ben Woodburn. Considering Liverpool have a game every three of four days, any injuries will be a devastating blow.
But Klopp knows what he’s doing, and if he wants to spend money – he will do.
Perhaps Liverpool fans will get a surprise like they did last January, when Klopp signed Steven Caulker on loan and used him as a makeshift striker off the bench on a few occasions!
