Manchester United have had little joy since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. The last out-field player to win the Sir Matt Busby player of the year award at the club was Robin Van Persie, goalkeeper David de Gea has won it every year since.
That one stat alone tells you how far the club have declined, and only for their great goalkeeper, Manchester United’s alarming descent could have been even greater.
This season, however, despite still not being where they believe they should be in the table, Manchester United have had some outstanding performers so far this season with a rejuvenated Antonio Valencia and free signing, Zlatan Ibrahimovic already leading the way for the coveted award this season.
Ander Herrera too is enjoying a positive campaign as he, Michael Carrick and Paul Pogba form a formidable midfield partnership that many believe has been the key to the revival under Mourinho, following a poor run of results.
The Daily Mirror claim the club have yet to offer the Spaniard an improved contract with just 16 months remaining on the player’s current deal.
The 27-year-old is keen to remain at the club and is seen by many as an ideal future captain at the club as rumours of current captain, Wayne Rooney’s possible departure this summer begin to gather pace.
“Of course, if they want to talk with me, I will be very happy to do that.”
The talented midfielder signed for the club in Athletic Bilbao on a four year contract. Seen as a key figure in the side and the players eagerness to stay, Mourinho too will be eager to get the player tied down to a long term contract following the improved terms already signed by Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard and Antonio Valencia.
Herrera would be free to negotiate terms with clubs outside the Premier League from January 2018.
