The 2014 season of WTA was no less than ATP season. It was nothing less than an action packed thriller season. The women put up a spectacular power-packed show full of surprises and thrill. The upcoming players and the stars of the game together showed what the game was all about. Achievements, shockers, upsets and success is what the season was all about. 

With the season ended let us look back at the Top 5 women players of 2014. Review and highlight what they have achieved and see where they stand.

5. Ana Ivanovic 

Without winning any titles in 2013 the Serb was back in form this year. After staying on No. 16 in 2013 Ana is in back in the top 5 with 4820 WTA points at the year end. Though Ana did not win any Grand Slam title she did manage to win other titles. Ana won titles at Auckland, Monterrey, Birmingham and Tokyo. With consistent performances in tournaments throughout the year and some titles Ana made it to the WTA Finals. Ana has a career win-loss record of 437-190 and career prize money $13,095,256. The former world No.1 after her entry back into the top 5 this year will be looking forward to regain her No. 1 ranking the coming season. 

4. Petra Kvitova 

Kvitova did not have a good start to the season but eventually picked up form after Wimbledon. Her year in one word would be “Wimbledon.”  Kvitova won her second Wimbledon this this year which was her biggest achievement in years as she won a Grand Slam after 3 years. She defeated Eugenie Bouchard in the finals in straight sets in 55 minutes. Winning the Wimbledon title got her 4th in world raking returning to the top 5 first time since 2012. Later on she won the Wuhan Open in China where she again defeated Eugenie Bouchard in the finals. The win in China got her qualified for the WTA Finals. Kvitova has 5966 WTA points at the end of the season. Kvitova has a career win-loss record of 341-150 and career earnings of $17,102,458.

3. Simona Halep

The year has only been an upward ride for the 23 year old Romanian. Simona last year won the WTA Award for The Most Improved Player and ranked No.11 at the year end. This year she had a major breakthrough as he made it to the top 2 in world for the first time in her career. Simona had her first major final this year in the French Open where she lost a hard fought three set match against Sharapova. Simona defeated former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic in the Australian Open and qualified for her first ever Grand Slam Quarter final. Simona later on won titles at Doha and Bucharest. With consistent performances at Grand Slams and other tournaments Halep qualified for the WTA Finals. Simona defeated world number one Serena in the initial round of the tournament. Simona went on to the finals of the tournament where she was again up against Serena but lost this time. Simona ranks No.3 at the year end and has a career win-loss record of 265-134. Simona is young and has a lot of potential to be the number one next year.

2. Maria Sharapova

After ending her season in August last year Sharapova returned this year where she had continuous success and performances. The year was all about consistency for Sharapova where she bagged one Grand Slam this year and finished as world No.2 at the yearend ranking with 7050 points. Sharapova had a ranking scare at the start of the year but went on to win two other titles later on. Sharapova won her second French Open title where she defeated Simona Halep in the finals which was one of the best Grand Slam final we saw this year. Apart from French Open Sharapova won titles at Stuttgart (3rd time), Madrid and Beijing. Sharapova has a career win-loss record of 557-133 and career earnings of $32,535,202. Sharapova ranked No.4 at the end of the previous season. 

1. Serena Williams 

The year has been full of achievements and landmarks for Serena. She ended as world No.1 with 8485 points and also completed 200 weeks as world No. 1 . Serena started the season with her win at Brisbane where she defeated world No.2 Victoria Azarenka in the finals. Serena had a bad run at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon but managed to win her 6th US Open singles title. Serena who has won the Wimbledon 5 times had a Wimbledon this year which she would totally like to forget. Serena had disturbing scenes at the Wimbledon as she had an early exit in 3rd round and had to withdraw from the doubles. Serena bounced back strong winning 19 of her next 20 matches. Serena won titles at Brisbane, Miami, Rome, Stanford and Cincinnati. Serena won the WTA Finals in Singapore and ended the season as No. 1. Serena has career win-loss record of 684-120 and career earnings of $63,500,779. Serena was World No.1 at the end of previous season.
