Hosts Bayern Munich thrashed Arsenal 5-1 at Allianz Arena (Munich) Wednesday night (IST). Thiago netted twice while Robben, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller scored a goal each for the hosts. Alexis Sanchez scored the only goal for the visitors after failing to score a penalty.

In the first leg of UCL 2016/17 round of 16, Arsenal suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat against the hosts Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena (Munich). Robben (11’) opened the scoreline for Bayern but soon Sanchez scored an equalizer.

The hosts extended their lead at the beginning of the second half through Lewandowski’s goal (53’). After that, Thiago Alcantara made it 4-1 in quick succession (56’ and 63’) while the substitute Thomas Muller ended up visitors’ awful night with a goal in the finishing minutes of the game(88’).

Earlier, Bayern took an early lead with a stunning goal from Arjen Robben. Just 11 minutes into the game, the Dutchman made a perfect shot from 25 yards distance, which found the top left corner of the net.

Arsenal had a chance to equalise the scoreline in the 27th minute when Neuer failed to grab Ozil’s low free-kick (from 20 meter distance). As a result, the ball returned back into the dangerous area but it went off the target.

Arsenal was awarded a penalty in the 30th minute but they failed to convert in into a goal.

Later, Lewandowski hit two headers during the first half but on both occasions, the ball went over the bar.

In the first half, Bayern had only three shots on target (out of 10 shots) while Arsenal managed to score 5 (out of 6 shots).

Seven minutes in to the second half, Lewandowski finally opened his account through a header. Lahm made a great cross to Lewandowski, who went over Mustafi and made it 2-1.

Just three minutes later, Thiago extended hosts lead to 3-1.

Thiago scored another goal in the 63rd minute. Thiago fired up on a returning ball from just outside the box which deflected from defenders and finally entered into the goal after hitting Ospina’s feet.

In the 88th minute, Thomas Muller piled on Arsenal’s misery to make it 5-1.

Despite making some great saves under the bar, Ospina failed to save his team from a humiliating defeat. In the second half, Arsenal failed to put any ball on target while Bayern hammered with nine more shots on target (out of 14 shots in the second half).

With this huge away defeat, it’s very tough for Arsenal to make a comeback in the return leg, which will be played on March 7 at Emirates Stadium (London). They surely need a miracle to advance into the next round of this competition.
