Indian captain Virat Kohli could only survive two balls in the first innings of the Pune Test, before getting out to Mitchell Starc on a duck, his first while playing at home in Tests. The Delhi lad, who has had terrific past six months with bat, registered his fifth duck, a contrasting number looking at his recent records.
Coming into bat after Starc jolted Cheteshwar Pujara with a beauty, Virat dodged the first ball before he chased a wide delivery and found a big edge, as Steven Smith did the rest in the slip cordon. Given Kohli’s run-of-form, he would have been utterly disappointed with his shot.
Virat, 28, lately became the first batsman ever to have scored four double hundreds in as many consecutive Test series, surpassing the record held by sir Donald Bradman and Rahul Dravid.
After Australia finished their first innings on 260, they were quick in putting the pressure back on India. Hazlewood first found Murali Vijay for 10 before Starc’s double-wicket maiden helped Australia take the session home.
In his Test career which has spanned nearly six years now, Kohli has got out on duck against the West Indies in Bridgetown (2011), vs Australia in Melbourne (2011) and vs England at Lord’s and Manchester (2014).
