Following a dominant show from Australia’s fast-bowling spearhead Mitchell Starc alongside his partner Josh Hazlewood in the morning session of the Day 2 of the Pune Test, the LED junction box at the boundary line caught the attention of players and the sparsed crowd when it caught fire, which further stopped the play for couple of minutes as smoke billowed from the box.
The incident happened at the stroke of lunch when Steve O’Keefe was bowling to Ajinkya Rahane when India was 66 for three in 21.1 overs with Rahane batting on three of 14 balls and KL Rahul batting on 46 off 70 balls.
The 27-year-old New South Wales-born Starc removed Indian Skipper Virat Kohli and top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara in the 15th over when India was 44 for three.
The Maharashtra Cricket Association ground staff swung into action by dousing the flames with the fire extinguisher when fire caused the flutter among fans beyond the boundary ropes.
