This past Sunday, we have witnessed the Universal championship match between Goldberg and Kevin Owens. This marked the end of the 188-day reign of KO which began eight days after Summerslam on a night where Triple H took him under his wings.
During the beginning of the Fastlane title match, Owens avoided colliding with Goldberg by roaming around the ringside. Chris Jericho’s music hit all of a sudden which distracted Owens. This gave Goldberg the opportunity to connect with a spear following with a jackhammer to pin the champion. This took him just 21 seconds to do so.
Now, there are some reasons why Goldberg was handed yet another squash match in his favor. Dave Meltzer discussed this match in his report at Wrestling Observer Newsletter and suggested that WWE was worried about the physical capability going into this match and hence would not think anything different from the squash match.
As we all know, The Myth is 50 plus and there are some serious concerns whether he is capable of pulling off a full-length match. The creative was worried that he might pick up an injury while heading into the Wrestlemania match against Brock Lesnar which has now been converted into a championship match.
WWE always wanted to protect the returning one from the ring-rust factors. The Boss wants him to stick around the company for some more occasions and is by any means he does a massive botch in front of the live audience, it will be a big headache for them. This is the reason that he had spent only a handful of time during his physical bouts, to date.
In addition, there was a storyline purpose behind this squash match. Stephanie McMahon instructed Mick Foley to protect Owens from the wrath of Goldberg. But, Jericho ruined all of that by providing the distraction.
The Raw commissioner might bring up the issue in near future to take forward the ongoing conflict between her and Foley. This would probably be the reason for why Foley will be removed from the GM post.
