2017 ICC Champions Trophy: BCCI Officials To Meet Virat Kohli And Anil Kumble Separately To Talk About Alleged Rift

With reports suggesting that all is not well between Team India skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Anil Kumble, some senior officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are reportedly set to meet to meet the duo separately in Birmingham where the team is currently preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan on June 4.
In fact, the matter has become so serious that there are even apprehensions over whether Kumble will be taking part in the interview process for the coach’s post after his contract expires after the Champions Trophy. The former India spinner was appointed the head coach in June last year and have enjoyed a highly successful stint with the team. He began his term with a 2-0 Test series victory in West Indies. In the following mammoth home season, the Virat Kohli-led side won 10 Tests, registering series victories over New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia, respectively.
According to a report in Firstpost, BCCI’s joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and GM (Cricket Operations) MV Sridhar are set to reach Birmingham on Wednesday (May 31) to initiate talks with the duo in order to resolve the alleged rift.
The report further claimed that the Indian cricket board will begin the process of interviewing the applicants for the coach’s post after the Pakistan match. May 31 was the last date for applying for the post. The BCCI, meanwhile, wants the new coach appointed before the team embarks on the West Indies tour for a limited-overs series which will start from June 23.
The new coach, meanwhile, will be selected in a similar process that saw Kumble leaving behind other competitors to land the coaching job last year. After the applicants apply for the post, they will be reviewed by the board’s three-member panel, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. The trio will conduct interviews and seek presentations before selecting the next coach.
The news outlet has also claimed that BCCI CEO Rahul Johri will go through all the applications before handing them over to the CAC members who are currently in the United Kingdom.
