Former India’s women’s head coach WV Raman backs the Indian team to win the gold medal in the Asian Games 2023 because of the depth they have got in the squad for the continental event in China. Indian opener Ruturaj Gaikwad will be leading the young team in the absence of the experienced Indian players in the squad.

The Men in Blue will be up against the arch-rivals Pakistan and other Asian teams for the elusive Gold Medal in the event. The matches will be played in the 20-over format of the game. VVS Laxman will head the coaching team with Sairaj Bahutule and Munish Bali assisting him for the mega event.

Speaking to TOI, WV Raman feels that the Indian team has got a well-rounded team heading in the Asian Games, as the players have the experience of playing in all three formats of the game and back the Indian team men to win the Gold medal in the event.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead the Indian team in the event, which comprises the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, Tilak Varma, and Rahul Tripathi in the squad.

“It’s a strong side as well because all of them have been really doing well in all formats that they’ve been playing – be it the IPL, domestic cricket or sporadic appearances for the main side. They’ve been doing really well, so it’s a very strong side and quite obviously I would expect them to come back with the gold medal,” WV Raman said.

On the other side, star Indian cricketers will be busy with the ICC World Cup 2023 preparations. The 50-over tournament will take place in India from October 5.

It’s Also Good That These Cricketers Are Going To Play In The Asian Games – WV Raman

WV Raman hailed the Indian domestic system for producing enormous talent in the country and feels that it was a good experience for young players to play in the Asian games.

“It gives us a measure of how strong the system is and gives us a measure of what kind of depth we have as far as talent is concerned in this country. It’s also good that these cricketers are going to play in the Asian games and will get game time, as I said earlier. It’s because if they are not to be concurrent, who knows how many of them would’ve been going to play in the Asian games,” WV Raman added.

The players who have performed well in the Indian Premier League and domestic cricket are given the opportunity in the absence of the key Indian players in the team. The young brigade will look to win the gold medal overcoming the challenges of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in the tournament.
