Atul Wassan Supports Split Captaincy In Indian Team Between Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma

Former Indian fast-bowler Atul Wassan believes that the Indian national cricket team should follow the split captaincy theory between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The 52-year-old Wassan feels that Kohli has too much load due to taking the leadership responsibility in every format of the Indian team.
After MS Dhoni retired from the Test cricket in December 2014, Virat Kohli took up India’s Test captaincy role. In early 2017, after Dhoni stepped down from the limited-overs captaincy roles, Kohli also became the captain of the ODI and T20I sides.
Under Kohli’s captaincy, India have continued their growth in every format of international cricket. Though Kohli-led India haven’t won a tournament yet, their success rate is still very high in every format of international cricket. Even, in the international tournaments, Kohli-led India always finishes on the top-four position. Also, they maintained the no.1-position in the ICC Test rankings for 43 successive months.
On the other hand, the present limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma has also achieved success as an Indian captain despite getting limited opportunities. Under his captaincy, India have won the Nidahas Trophy 2018 and Asia Cup 2018.
Talking about the split captaincy in the Indian team, Atul Wassan praised Kohli’s leadership approach in every format but also defended Rohit’s captaincy skills.
According to Sportskeeda, Wassan said, “Yes, I think India should think about split captaincy because it is too much load. Virat (Kohli) loves it, I think he wants to captain all three formats. But Rohit Sharma has shown us that he’s an instinctive leader.”
Atul Wassan also mentioned captain Rohit Sharma’s success in the IPL
Captain Rohit Sharma is very successful in the IPL as he is holding the record of winning most IPL trophies as a captain. Under his captaincy, Mumbai Indians (MI) have won the record four IPL trophies. Also, the Mumbai franchise won the Champions League T20 2013 under his leadership.
Atul Wassan feels that Kohli is the best choice for Test captaincy as well as ODI captaincy, but Rohit’s leadership in the T20I format can take out the stress from Kohli.
Wassan added, “His record is good, he leads from the front. With Mumbai Indians, he did the same. In Test cricket, Virat is the boss. In one day-cricket, Virat should be the captain, but in T20Is, take the stress out of Virat’s life, and let someone else lead the side like Rohit Sharma.”
