Australia Fans ‘Really Hurt’ After Ball-Tampering Scandal: Faf du Plessis

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis feels the anger and hurt emanating from the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal scandal is still palpable among Australian cricket fan.

Earlier this year in March, Australian cricket was rocked by the ball-tampering scandal. It eventually led to some big changes in the team. The scandal had resulted in the resignation of head coach Darren Lehmann, while Steven Smith (12 months), David Warner (12 months) and Cameron Bancroft (9 months) were handed lengthy bans.

Later, James Sutherland had resigned from his post of Cricket Australia’s CEO, thus ending his two-decade association.

Justin Langer had then replaced Lehmann as coach while Tim Paine took over as the Test captain. Not surprisingly, the team from Down Under has struggled to do well in the absence of its former captain and vice-captain. They were whitewashed in ODIs in England before losing to Pakistan in the T20I tri-series final. They had also lost the Test and T20I series against Pakistan in UAE. In their last assignment, they lost to South Africa at home.

And Faf du Plessis feels the Australian fans are yet to move on from the Cape Town scandal.

“It’s difficult to experience the hurt that Australian cricket is going through if you’re not there. The public is angry at what happened,” du Plessis told reporters in South Africa.

“It has affected the general supporters in Australia. They were honestly really hurt.

“You understand why they want to play a different brand of cricket because there is a lot of eyes on them, the style they play and the way they carry themselves as cricketers but also as people.

“I understand where it’s coming from. They’ll find out what works for them over the next six months or so if it’s really something they believe in,” he added.

Australia will now be looking to put up some good performance in the upcoming assignment against India. They will host India for three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs.
