Chetan Sakariya Exhibited Temperament Of Zaheer Khan And Ashish Nehra: Virender Sehwag

The 22-year-old was the pick of the Rajasthan bowlers who returned with the figures of 3/31 on his IPL debut. He struck in the third over to get rid of opener Mayank Agarwal (12) and then returned in the final over to dismiss KL Rahul (91) and Jhye Richardson (0).

Chetan Sakariya’s brilliant performance impressed former opener turned commentator Virender Sehwag as the former cricketer lauded the youngster’s fearless approach and compared his temperament with former India left-arm seamers Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra.

“I’ve heard his name, even saw him bowl in domestic games but didn’t expect that he would bowl so well. You face different batters in the domestic circuit but in IPL, you come across big and renowned batsmen. We got to see his temperament. He was fearless,” Virender Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra always say that as a bowler, you should never be scared of getting hit for a boundary. Until you won’t get hit, you cannot learn and pick wickets.

“So, I think, he [Sakariya] exhibited that kind of temperament. He had variations as well. Though there were a few no-balls overall, he bowled very well. The way he got Mayank Agarwal and surprised Chris Gayle with one of his deliveries, he was completely impressive,” Virender Sehwag added.

The Rajasthan Royals, however, lost their opening encounter to Punjab Kings by 4 runs on Monday night in Mumbai as Sanju Samson’s ton-the first ton in IPL 2021 went in vain as PBKS seamer Arshdeep Singh conceded only 8 runs in the last over.

KL Rahul (91 off 50) and Deepak Hooda (64 off 28) powered Punjab Kings to an imposing 221 for six after being put in to bat on a batting track.

In reply, Rajasthan captain Sanju Samson almost took Royals home with a breath-taking 119 off 63 balls but was caught off the game’s final ball with left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh defending 13 runs in the last over.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) overcame a spirited Rajasthan Royals (RR) challenge, led by a sensational Sanju Samson, and emerged victorious in a high-scoring thriller in Match 4 of the IPL 2021 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday.

PBKS skipper KL Rahul led from the front, with a defining knock of 91 before Arshdeep Singh who also took 3 scalps bowled an excellent 20th over which helped the side seal a 4-run win.

There was no stopping the RR skipper Sanju Samson though as the right-hander brought up a magnificent century, becoming the first batsman to get a hundred on IPL captaincy debut.

PBKS had the worst record among all teams in the death overs in IPL 2020 and they struggled once again in this game as RR needed 48 off the final 4 with Sanju Samson on the song. It was only Arshdeep Singh who kept his nerves even as the rest of the bowlers got a real hammering at the hands of the RR skipper.

Apart from veteran Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh, the other bowlers conceded more than 10 runs per over.

Brief Scores: Punjab Kings 221/6 (KL Rahul 91, Deepak Hooda 64, Chetan Sakariya 3/31) beat Rajasthan Royals 217/7 (Sanju Samson 119, Riyan Parag 25, Arshdeep Singh 3/35) by 4 runs
