Deep Dasgupta Feels Shubman Gill May Miss The 2019 WC
The former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta feels Shubman Gill may miss the upcoming World Cup flight.
On last Thursday (31 January), during the Hamilton ODI, Gill made his international debut where he scored just nine runs. Gill has impressed many experts through his top batting skills. Even, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli has recently praised him.
The right-handed batsman was the Player of the Tournament during India U19’s victory in the 2018 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Gill was the second highest run-scorer in that tournament as he scored 372 runs with an average of 124.00.
Later, he also impressed in IPL 2018 where he played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In his first IPL season, Gill scored 203 runs in 13 matches with the average of 33.83.
He has maintained this impressive form in the recent domestic cricket season. These performances have led him to make his international debut at the age of just 19 years old. Dasgupta has also been impressed with his batting skills as the former feels that Gill is special. However, Dasgupta believes that it is too late for Gill to earn the call-up for the upcoming World Cup squad.
Dasgupta told ESPNcricinfo, “Shubman Gill will have his time. He is special, he is class act but he will have his opportunity. He will get his time.”
Deep Dasgupta Feels Dhoni Will be Key In The Upcoming WC
The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup will begin on 30 May, and it will run till 14 July. While England and Wales are going to host this tournament, Dasgupta believes MS Dhoni will be the key player for the Indian national cricket team. The former wicketkeeper feels that the batsmen will have to face tough challenges in the first half of World Cup and that’s why the experienced Dhoni’s presence is a matter for India.
He said, “If Dhoni is fit, I would play him. The World Cup is pretty long. You are gonna play the World Cup in the first half of the English summer which can be a little chilly, windy, moist and everything. Conditions as a batsman would be very tough in the first half of the World Cup. I think it will give you some kind of an idea. If MS Dhoni is fit, I will play him.”
After a poor ODI form in 2018, Dhoni has started with a bang in 2019. Playing in four ODI innings in 2019, Dhoni has scored three half-centuries. Moreover, in his last three innings, he was not out. In 2019, Dhoni has scored 241 runs in four ODI innings with the average of 241.00.
Dhoni missed the last two ODIs due to the hamstring injury. However, before the upcoming Wellington ODI, India’s assistant coach Sanjay Bangar assured that Dhoni is fit for the final ODI of the ongoing series in New Zealand.
