India’s recent tour to West Indies will be unforgettable as they inflicted whitewash over the host across formats. While there have been a lot of positives from the tour, KL Rahul’s poor return has raised questions on his place in the team. Recently, former India cricketers Kiran More and Dilip Vengsakar backed Rohit Sharma to replace Rahul in the team.

Dilip Vengsarkar, while speaking to Mid Day remarked Rohit as a world-class player who has proven it with his batting performance. According to him, it doesn’t matter where Rohit is batting as everything depends on the mental state. Vengsarkar also labelled him as a big match player and seemed confident about Rohit success in the Test arena.
“To make him bat in the opening position or No. 3 or 4 doesn’t really make much of a difference. It is just about the mental state. It is a good thing that he will be opening; he will get a dedicated slot to bat in.”
“He is a world-class player and has proved it. Give him a platform, and he will perform. He delivered when the whole world was watching during his innings [of 140] against Pakistan in the World Cup. He is a big-match player, so I am sure he will succeed,” Vengsarkar said.
Rohit Sharma played his Test match against Australian last year. He was in the Test squad against West Indies but didn’t get an opportunity to play. Dilip Vengsarkar opined that it was not right to leave Rohit out of the team after scoring five centuries in the World Cup.
“Leaving a player like Rohit out of the playing XI was very surprising. He is a world-class player. Would the team management have dropped him if we were playing a strong team like England or Australia?
“After scoring five centuries in the World Cup and being in such great form, it was unfair to leave him out of the playing XI. We don’t know why he was dropped,” said the former India skipper.
Rohit Sharma is an asset to the Indian Team
Rohit Sharma, so far, has played 27 Test Matches scoring 1585 runs with three centuries and ten half-centuries. Kiran More also spoke on the lines of Dilip Vengsarkar and stated that Rohit is as an asset for any team. He can bat at any position and it will be great to have him in the playing XI.
“Rohit can be part of the team’s XI anytime. He can bat at any position. He has the experience of opening [in limited overs]. It is a great asset for the Indian team that a player of his calibre is sitting out. It will be great to have him in the XI,” said More.
Chairman of selector MSK Prasad has also hinted at Rohit Sharma’s inclusion as a Test opener. However, the fans will have to wait till the South Africa series to begin from October 2 to see if Rohit makes a comeback to the Test team.
